Series 2a starter motor packed up.

I have been turning my engine over using the starter motor connected directly to the battery. I used to have to 'wiggle' the connection bolt to get it to urn over, then it stopped working. Took it to an auto election who told me to was totally buggered but he had one he could recondition for $450. This seems a settle steep. Would it be worth replacing with an after market starter, and if so does anyone have any recommendations.

    Cheers
    Steve.

easy enough to rebuild too, good idea to strip the old one down and see why it failed

sounds like the connection bolt you wiggle has broken off the copper strip which it is attached to inside the starter, that most likely doesn't make it totally buggered, but there may be other things in the starter that need attention.
I'd pull it apart and see for yourself what is wrong first.
