did you change the bell housing or the fly wheel adaptor over when you changed the box/engine.?

if you've split the shafts you may have also put the shafts together with half a front and half the rear

if you changed the flanges over on the box you might have the front flange in the rear of the box and the rear flange in the front of the box.

Has it had a Holden engine? Some of them moved everything back to clear front cross member.

Thanks Dave, I didn't change anything regarding engine/gearbox, was a straight swap. I have 2 front and 2 rear tailshafts and all 4 ends are the same lengths.
Dave, it doesn't look like there was a holden engine, the 2.25 petrol slotted straight into the mounts that were there, and there is about 100mm clearance between the back of the engine and fire wall.
The rear diff is a Salisbury so maybe that accounts for the rear tailshaft, but the front has me stumped.

Hi, u will need a shorter rear shaft for the rear coz of the salisbury rear diff. Maybe try a 6cyl front shaft as they are longer than the 4 cyl front shaft. Hope this helps.

Talking of 6 cylinders, does any know if the 6 had different front springs (heavier and shorter)?
If so that could be my drama as I don't know what engine it was originally. I've just measured the old series 2 and there seems to be about 30mm difference in length (maybe just sag?). Project for today: remove and swap out front springs. Spring bushes, here I come.

As far as I know the front springs are all the same length as the chassis are basicly the same. The 6cyl motors are longer than the 4cyl so the gbox and transfer are mounted further back and so the longer front tailshaft on the 6cyl. Other than the few differences between 4 and 6cyl basicly things are very interchancable on most series land rovers, but the rivet counters will point out the differences for you im sure. Hope this helps.

The six has different springs, possibly just greater bend.

All Series Landrovers, at least since 80", have the same length spring, just the set and number/thickness of leaves varies.

And yes, the six is set further back.

Problem solved, the springs have way more set than the old series 2. Old ones fitted up no prob. Thinking back, the PO mentioned it had "heavy duty" springs. Too bad the old ones are U/S, one is rusted bad and the other has a broken leaf. Looks like a new set is the go.
