    IIa Seatbelts

    Hi,

Newcomer to the forum, thanks for all the great advice I've been able to mine. Got a '67 IIa SWB a couple of months ago -- provisionally named Big Ears on account of those mirrors -- and she's close to going for her rego: already got a new diff, suspension bushes, universals, master brake cylinder, and just waiting on some welding for the door pillars. I want to take off the cab and drive her topless, but want to fit seatbelts. Can anyone suggest where I might get hold of an original or replica safety harness like the one below, which is taken from the optional catalogue?

    Many thanks in advance

    Tim

Gee, she even comes with a spare pair of legs to push her when she breaks down

Nice find - nearly roadworthy with so little to do. Planning to do a slow 'fix up' from there or just enjoy her?

I can't help with the seat belts, though they are in my future too.

Wouldn't just ordinary lap sash seat belts fit?

    Several points:-

    1. seat belts were not legally required, nor, indeed did Australian standards for them exist at any time during 2a production.

    2. However, many 2as were fitted with seat belts when new, or fairly new, particularly by SMHEA (World pioneers in seat belts). In the absence of standards these belts and anchorages should be OK provided the vehicle has been continuously registered.

    3. To fit belts to a vehicle not previously fitted, requires fitting to current standards. For a 2A this means late Series 3 fittings (which are bolt-on, pretty much, but some fittings are not available new), or engineering approval. The lower mounts are available and easily fitted - the problem is the shoulder mount. Your preference to have it topless means that you need the mount on the rear bulkhead. If it is not already fitted (it was on some late 2As) it will need engineering approval, and the engineer will probably require some sort of structure to raise it to shoulder level. The usual way of achieving this on an open Landrover is a roll bar - which will need engineering approval.

I am pretty certain that all new seat belts to day are required to be self-adjusting with inertial reels, so you can't fit ones exactly the same as you picture (and ADRs also do not allow two piece belts as they allow only part of the harness to be fitted).

How closely the ADRs are required to be followed is likely to depend on the engineer!

    Hope this helps,

    John

send a PM to The ho hars on this site, they supply series parts from saved vehicles.
in qld seat belts were not required until 1972,
my '71 s2a has factory inertia belts as fitted from new, and has a placard stating 'the seat belt anchorages in this vehicle comply with Brit standard AU 48 . 1965, or words to that effect.

Thanks for all the advice. I kind of like the fact that she's been round the block a couple of times, and don't want to tart her up too much. Might get that matt green paint off tho.

Great information from JDNSW: she's not been continuously registered, but she's got belts in at the moment. I reckon a rollover bar -- sensible as it is -- would wreck the look, and some of the warnings on lap straps make me a bit leery. I'll take your advice Harry and see if the guys in QLD some original parts...

    Huge thanks

Confirming what I said - no Australian standards at the time!

There is no doubt that lap belts are less effective than three point belts - but they are vastly more effective than no belts, and until quite recently were what was provided in the middle seat of all vehicles with three abreast seating, including all Series, 90/110, and Defender Landrovers.

New lap/sash belts from the UK are reasonably priced.
SEC30030 | Static Lap and Diagonal Belt for outer front seats of Series hardtop vehicles. - Paddock Spares

The inertia reel belts from Securon have AU/NZ rating but cannot confirm that the lap/sash have the same rating.
