The selector may have come loose on the shaft and moved. You can check that by removing the top cover.

Thanks phil, will work my way around it, dont know much about gearboxes, it should be pretty straight forward, at least the bit of removing the top cover. also, been having an issue with the headlights, they simply stopped working, fuses are fine cabling is fine bulbs are fine.... its buffling i do not seem to find a relay or any other component any ideas?

Headlights - most likely problem is the headlight earth. The Landrover body is bolted together, and the return earth circuit relies on these bolted joints continuing to make good contact. Try running an earth wire direct from the headlight earth point to the battery earth point.

    HiPhil

Just to let you know, I had to drive the landy without second gear, for quite some time, when I got to my destination, second gear just worked as if nothing was wrong with it. Should I still open the cover and inspect? or might have simply been stuck and the ride got it all loose?

If it's not broken don't fix it I suppose, but it may come loose again. I'd have a look anyway. Not a big job.
