Simple fix - grind the number off the S3 chassis and stamp the 2a's number in it.

You would probably get away with it - but the consequences of not getting away with it could be quite severe (probably a minimum of several years).

On the other hand, there is no obvious legal issue with cutting substantial parts out of the S3 chassis to replace bits of your existing one, although there is the practical issue that the S3 has pressed chassis rails where the 2a has rails made from four flats.

And I don't know about other states...but in SA, if the numbers stamped in looked in the least suspicious...when it went over the pits...the vehicle is seized, tow-trucked to police compound and police investigate potential re-birth stolen vehicle.

Being a bit paranoid here IMO - Have you seen how the factory number is stamped? Couldn't be dodgier than that - they were only done with standard number punches. No one looking at the vehicle to register it would be able to tell the difference between a series 2a and a series 3 chassis - very low risk on a vehicle like this.

Think about the questions that matter - is it being done to rip someone off or rebirth a car - no. Is it being done to dupe a potential buyer into a fraudulent transaction - no. Were either of the chassis stolen - no. Does it make the car any less safe - no (in fact quite the opposite)

I'd do it to put a better (and safer than a rusty mess) chassis in something like this. The laws are there for a reason yes, I quite agree with them in general, but like most laws, they are written to allow for the lowest common denominator.

Would I trumpet it all over a public forum like this? No, I'd say I'd rethink my descision and just do it without making any further fuss about it.

Nah no paranoia, just facts...seen plenty of people in tears as their cars with suspect numbers are seized.... As long as he goes into it armed with the facts of what may happen, he can make an informed decision on the risk.

Fair enough - Different system over here (not sure about Tas where Carlos is) so it's get a RWC and register it - that gets done at any mechanic with the VicRoads licence to do them. No central authority checking vehicles like in SA so much less chance.

Here in Northern NSW, police don't have the "time" to arrest known local criminals, with Local business, being robbed, able to supply CT footage, good enough to see who they are.
Dodgy serial number, Problem. Dont thinks so.
30 second white slip for my Honda motorcycle.
Most of my cars, over the years, are registered from details I supply, with out checking. Longest time being the brake check.

Right, I sorted my chassis issue... I bought a suffix b 88" . So yes it means I'm going to build and 88 instead of the 109 which will be a parts vehicle for some bits.
