    Steering relay washers

    Hi All,

I have my steering relay in pieces now, and also have acquired a rebuilt kit consisting of the two seals, four half bushes, and two paper gaskets.

What I am not sure about is the washers. There are two types of washers in the steering relay, the thinner steel ones that sit between the spring and bushes, and the other thicker (brass ?) ones that sit on the other side of the bushes at each end. I understand the thicker washers are the "thrust" washers, but I have no idea what the thinner steels ones are called if they are called anything special.

My steel ones are rusty, so I would like to replace them, and I think the part number is RNA969. I haven't had any luck trying to find someone who can supply a couple of these, so I am looking for any pointers to where I can buy them.

Also, I think my thrust washers look ok, but how can I really tell if they need replacing ? and what is the correct part number ?, I have seen the part number listed as RNC667, 241383 and 230760 on various websites/ebays.

    Any guidance appreciated.

    Thanks
    John

The steel ones were stocked by Four Wheel drives in Hallam (their part number SS32). They are just a steel washer so it might be possible to source them from a bolt shop but trying to match ID, OD and approximate thickness may be problematic.
The brass/bronze thrust washers are also listed, their part number SS30 (they were $16.50 each some years back !).

There shouldn't be much in the way of upward or downward thrust on the relay, I've taken a few apart and there has been no wear on the thrust washers.

Thanks Colin, but it looks like Four Wheel drives in Hallam don't have them anymore.

I'll try the local bolt shop.

    Cheers,

The steel washers are just to stop the spring chewing into the fibre bushes.

Have you phoned/emailed them ? Don't rely on their website as it doesn't list a fraction of what they hold (and can get).

Ah ok, I'll ring them. I thought the website was a bit dismal. I have never dealt with them before, so it'll be interesting to see how it goes with a small purchase.

    Cheers,

If you have any issues let me know and I'll collect and post on to you.
They changed hands recently but the company dates back to the 1950's, so does some of their stock....
They used to have a lot of secondhand parts and purchased job lots from the Army auctions.

Well, it didn't go so well, a package arrived today which contained what appears to be 4 x thrust washers, and not the 4 x steel washers (ss32) that I ordered. Phoning them tomorrow.

    Cheers,
    John

How much did you pay because the thrust washers are a lot more expensive (old catalogue $16.50 each). If you get any issues let me know and I'll call in and get the correct ones.
