    Welch plug has me stumped.

I’m cleaning up my 2.25 petrol block and ordered replacement welsh plugs for the side and the single at the rear.
Popped them all out and then I noticed that the rear one supplied was larger than the one removed. What is strange is that it seems that the block still has a ‘liner’ inserted.
Has anyone seen this before, do I remove it or get a smaller plug?
    Thanks for any advice.

What came out was it a dished or cup welsh plug the photo of the block looks like it takes a dished type , the plug sits against the sholder then you hit the center with a hammer to expand it.my parts book says it should be 1 1/2" & looks like a dish by the photo in the parts book. Be worned if they give you a metric one & not imperial it could be just under size & may not expand enough. Brother & I have booth had trouble with his Jag & my MG were once the radiator gets to pressure the plugs pop out untill we started buying them at swaps & measuring them before we bought them , didn't have a problem after that.

Looks like it should be a dished type welch plug. It sits on that ledge in the bck of the head concave out. Put a little sealer on it and place it on the ledge and one hit with a hammer in the middle and that should spread it and hold it in place

Thanks guys - I’ll have another look in the morning. The one I ordered was 1 1/2” USA made and brass, but I’ll ask about a dish type.
Does anyone else have one in the rear of the motor?

That doesn’t seem enough of a shoulder to me for a dish type plug, I would be trying a 1&3/8 cup type first.

I now see that British Auto Parts lists the following as the options for the rear welsh plug
    15/16”
    1 1/2”
    1 3/8”
    1 3/4”
So whitey56 I think you may we’ll be on the money with the 1 3/8”
I’ll let you know how I go.
    Thanks once again everyone.

Whitey56 - spot on. I got the 1 3/8” cup welsh plug and it fitted perfectly. Thanks Mate.

Here you go - all I could think is that the foundry had a problem with the casting and put a liner in(?)
