Hi,
not sure but I think it may depend on position of steering arm on swivel.
are yours on top or below ?
What year S2
Also there are two types of ball joints fitted, correct type must be fitted to your S2

Hi,
I’m replacing ball joints in a Series 2 88” and I’m confused about how the ball joints are orientated.
Workshop manual has various illustrations showing the threat pointing down, and others with the thread pointing up.
Does it matter?
cheers
John

Tie rod ends can only be fitted one way because they a tapered pin going into a tapered hole.
Correct. If the steering arm is under the swivel, the tie rod end is above it, if the steering arm is on top, the TRE is under it.
While on the subject of the tie rod ends, note that there are two types; up to Series 2a (maybe very early S3) the shank has an unthreaded section that the tube clamps on. Later ones clamp on the thread, and are threaded all the way.
Mismatching tubes and tie rod ends must not be assembled together. These are unsafe due to it being impossible to securely clamp threads against a smooth surface.
Since the complete tie rod (or drag link) is interchangeable between S2/2a and S3, the only way of being sure what you have is to look.

The threads are 11/16" x 16 tpi NS, left and right hand. I still have stock of taps and dies for these. PM if interested.
