Looking for a Roadworthy mechanic in Melbourne.

    Hi guys

I have bought a 1963 Series 2a 88 from McLaren Vale recently. It was registered with club registration in Adelaide.

As part of transferring the rego to Victoria I have been trying to get the road worthy check in Melbourne, however none of the mechanics I have taken the car to seem to want to take it on. I guess the car is too old for them to take a risk on. They are worried it doesn’t have seatbelts etc.

Are there any roadworthy places that specialize in old cars?

I am over getting it towed to different mechanics and they just won’t even look at it.

    Any recommendations would be appreciate

    Thanks
    Gary

It doesn't need seatbelts in VIC until 1971.
I can't help with a roadworthy tester but I'd be taking or sending a few pictures rather than getting it towed to different testers (sounds expensive).

The rear seats look a bit unusual (certainly not original), the backs are too low so I'm not sure you'd get it signed off for more than 3 seats plus you might need to remove the rears.

The front wing 'cut' might also cause some concern. The Series II had a similar cut to the front wings but not as high as on your vehicle.

Best of luck finding a roadworthy tester.
A Google search throws up a few places that restore/maintain/roadworthy classic vehicles.

    Hi Colin

    Thanks for your feedback.

The previous owner didn’t have any issues with the roadworthy in SA and had it registered as 7 seater. I am hoping I can use the rear seats, otherwise it will have to be 3 seater only.

Yes, the tow truck fees add up pretty quickly. ; ).

I am not a big fan of the modified front wings and intend to replace the front wings if I can get my hands on second hand ones or if I can find someplace that sells them new.

    Cheers

    Gazcoonar,
that looks very tidy straight unit bar the "chopped" guards.
Does it have the original 2.25 engine, or an engine conversion?

I recently got a roadworthy inspection done by a mechanic in regional Victoria the vehicle had a holden conversion done similar to yours (202)
I got a permit to drive it to the Mechanics, a simple online procedure with Vicroads, he will require the permit two test brakes etc in a road test
On the permit I stated chassis and engine number, 6 cylinder and 3.3 liter capacity as well as other vehicle details, all this flowed through to the Roadworthy Certificate and then onto Registration Papers
Vicroads sighted chassis and engine number to verify paperwork then issued plates.

As long as the car stops, doesn't weep to much oil and has working electrics, dipping lights and speedo etc roadworthy shouldn't be to much of a hurdle
Sound out a local car club or talk to someone with club plates in a carpark they will know mechanics familiar with older vehicles

Good Luck you need this car for summer

    Cheers Paul
