    Oil pressure drop

I noticed during hard stopping the oil pressure would drop from 60psi to 20psi on the gauge, I decided to do an internal inspection of the oil pump and motor while I had the sump off. The engine has 700 miles on it from a rebuild and as I had a spare sump gasket I thought I may as well check everything and inspect the oil pump while I changed the oil. When I dismantled the oil pickup pipe I found a crushed “O” ring at the sealing surface of the pickup pipe to pump housing. I replaced the “O” ring with a new one and reinstalled the pipe. A quick look at Conrods and crankshaft and I reassembled the sump changed the filter and new oil.
Test ran engine to check for leaks none found so out for a quick spin, oil pressure still drops under heavy braking. So now I am wondering do all Land Rover 2 1/4 engines do the same thing. The sump is original with full baffle plate the oil pickup pipe is original and the sump is full of oil.
Has anyone else had the same experience or am I just naturally lucky.426E95F5-7A90-47E2-B8C8-65EFEDACAD68.jpgF512F7BE-AB42-4DE4-B2EE-59C45B0C7CAF.jpg6B7DC7B6-50AD-42CA-B459-724DF98C5113.jpg

    G'day All,

Had the same problem under heavy breaking. The reason is the pickup is at the back of the engine and oil surge under heavy breaking causes the oil to travel towards front of engine.

The fix is to fit a Series 3 oil pickup which is at the side of the engine. You will also need the bracket that supports the oil pickup. I use a Viton O ring BS211 on the pipe that connects to the pump.

Also doesn't the O ring go on the other side of the lip?

Thanks for the reply I will try to source a Series 3 oil pickup, the “O” ring has to go on the nut side with a washer between the nut and flare of the pipe. There is a seat for the pipe in the pump.

    G'day All,

I put the O ring between the pump and the tube to seal the tube completely meaning the O ring acts as a static seal.

The other thing to check might be that the dipstick is setting the right level - fill the sump with the correct amount of oil and confirm that the dipstick shows the correct level. While it is unlikely that there is an issue, with the length of time since the engine was built, it is possible that it has at some stage had the dipstick or tube modified or replaced for some reason - and wrong parts used.

I'll second JD's idea of checking the dipstick as this is exactly what happened to my Lightweight.
No idea if the dipstick tube is/was original, but it was loose and had sunk about 50mm lower into the block/sump, so even when showing high oil level on the dipstick it was actually below minimum!
From memory, the length of the dipstick from the nut on the block up to the end should be 295mm.

Thanks for the replies I measured the oil when I changed the oil and filter, 6.5 litres. My dipstick reads exactly on the high / full mark after running engine and letting it settle overnight. I checked the engine oil specifications this morning and it states 6.85 litres I’ll add the extra today and see if it makes any difference.
