Hi Mick,
another 2a ute for your list
called Betsy, not road reg'd at the moment but trundles around a property in the Adelaide Hills.
Power brakes but booster leaks so you have to stand on them REALLY hard...
Cheers
Paul
1971 IIA ute, 186 (Betsy)
they're not dents, they're character...
Just aquired a lovely SII ute (1960 model). Got no idea where to start, but I'm a sucker for punishment....

Hi I have a Short Wheel base, year not sure, just started the motor today finished the rewire last week. All seems OK to road register. Am interested in talking to someone local regarding making this a daily driver. The motor revs excessive over 80 kms, not sure what is the most bullet proof, reliable chepist option to achieve it, has a 202 in it.
Regards Garry
G day. the only real way to get the revs down is to see if you can find a cheap overdrive unit or change the diff ratios to 3.55 i think it is. even better would be the original 4 cylinder with a overdrive. enjoy![]()
Quite easy to modify the 202 to handle sustain higher rpm's. Remember you are using a passenger car/light commercial vehicle engine that as built was meant to provide economical reliable travel mostly under 3000rpm for a long life. I had them in fleets that ran 300,000 plus k's without the lid coming off. Now a Holden car with 2.78 diff and auto as most were, cruised at 110k's at 3000rpm with no problems. Now remember the Torana with XU1 option. These ran 500 miles at Bathurst mostly between 5500 and 7000rpm, so high rpm durability is achievable and with factory bits. for a red engine you can fit big valves, stronger springs, after-market highspeed hydraulic lifters, and also hardened seats whilst you are at it. Two x 1 3/4" SU's and 186S/GTR split exhaust headers or extractors combined with a twin 2 1/4" exhaust system. Balanced engine. Mild camshaft regrind. Ask the grinder for recommendations. you want more oomph at higher rpm without too much affect on the excellent low speed torque curve. If you really want to get into it, get the crank and rods from a blue 12 port engine. Any decent crankshaft shop can modify the fully counter-balanced crank from the alter engine to fit a red engine.
