Thread: Is this hub standard

    Thanks to all for the great info, I now have a weekend project!
    The oil is leaking into the brake drum?

    I presume you mean "oil is leaking INTO the brake drum". This will be the seal on the inside of the hub.

    As you have identified, the first step is to remove the free wheel hub. This gives access to the bearing adjusting nut and lock nut, which can then be removed. followed by the whole hub.

    You will need a hub nut spanner, the seal and a replacement lock washer for the wheel bearing nut. Check the wheel bearings while you are at it, andreplace as necessary.

    then the oil is not leaking from the freewheeler its leaking from the hub seal...

    to start..

    remove the 6 screws and extract the selector(paper gasket here)
    delve in and remove the locking pin (a bit fiddly i used 45 degree offset needle nozed pliers)
    remove the axle bolt (watch for the spacer shim that might come with it)
    remove the 6 bolts that mate the flange to the hub(paper gasket and again watch for the spacer)
    using a small pry bar lever up the locking washer from the outer 52mm hub bearing nut and remove that
    remove the locking washer, beat it flat or discard it for a new one
    remove the inner 52mm hub bearing nut
    grab the wheel and pull (watch for the outer bearing and thrust plate)
    lay the wheel down so the brake drum faces up
    you should see a claged out bit of black rubber in the middle of the hub...

    more than likely that will be the offender, rip it out and reseat a new one...

    reverse the above to put it back together paying attention to the correct setting of the bearing nuts.

    Thats been covered previously on site but if you cant find it let me know and we can cover it again.

    According to ARB's catalouge they do an AVM hub servicing kit.

    Im' only just getting around to doing this job (Work before pleasure)

    However I'm still having trouble with it

    I have highlighted the stage I am up to in red.

    When I try to loosen the nut on the end of the axle: the axle turns,
    making it impossible to remove.

    Is there a way to lock the axle or diff??
    I have put the vehicle in 4wd and the front drive shaft is locked.

    Or am I missing the obvious.

    Engage the fwh on the opposite wheel, then pull the red gear lever back into low range 4x4. This will stop the axle turning while you're trying to undo it and, later, do it up.

    Hand brake on

    four wheel drive (either high or low, doesn't matter.

    Lock the opposite front hub

    Prevent opposite wheel from turning - either wheel on ground or lock brake with the adjuster if you have the wheel off or jacked up.


    For the second one, after you have removed one hub, lock the axle by holding it with vice grips on the spline (if you are fussy, protect the jaws with suitable padding).

    G'day Folks

    Not a lot of people have a rattle gun as part of their tool kit

    But as you have been advised, lock the opposite wheel into 4 wheel drive before trying to remove/disassemble the unit, the most fiddly bit is removing the split pin that holds the castleated nut on the end of the axle,(replace this split pin with a new one)the freewheel hub can be removed by undoing the 6 small screws, (with hub in 2 wheel drive location)then undo axle nut,then undo the drive flange studs, (check that these studs are not stretched, as they often are,stud threads have a waist in them) with the hub studs removed and the axle nut removed,a light tap will remove freewheel unit, you can then service the wheel hub as per the manual, replace with new axle hub nut lock washer, set bearing freeplay at .001-.003 thou inch.

    If you have no access to AVM hub end gasket, one can be hand made from gasket paper available from REPCO, 1/32 nd will do.
