    It's a bit smaller than 1/2" UNF, and bigger than 7/16" UNF. In fact, the minor diameter of the thread is 7/16" (I can just get a 7/16 bolt into the hole inside the threads).

    I guess the next step is to take it down to Better Brakes and see if they have a fitting which goes in.

    In answer to my own question, the picture below shows how it all fits together.

    Yes, there are metric and imperial mixed on the same fitting.

    Yes, the 3/8UNF on the master cylinder connects to the 7/16UNF on the proportioning valve.

    Yes, the 12mm on the master cylinder connects to the 3/8UNF on the proportioning valve.

    No, the 3/8 fittings don't connect to each other, that would be too sensible.

    I hope this helps somebody else, it took a while to figure this lot out.
