Question Prease O Land Rover Guru's
Would a set of original steel Disco wheels fit and work properly on smeg? My neighbour has some he wants to get rid of and I was thinking of trying them out to dress him up a bit.
Afternoon All;
Managed to pick up the new front left guard for Smeg on the weekend, it turned out to be the same Camino Gold (gotta have a win sometimes). Pretty good shape, no bog but it does have a hole up near the bulkhead mounting bolt for a CB/UHF Radio. Cleaned it up, a little bit of light panel-beating, etch priming and some colour later and it looks very presentable. Also painted the steering damper cover plate and the wheel arch guards, bolted them all back on with the radiator fan guard as well and it's starting to resemble one of Solihull's finest again. Nathan can see his truck taking shape and has been at me to take him for more lessons and now has 101hrs up and is keen as mustard to drive his truck as soon as he can. This coming weekend will be taken up re-wiring the front end as in my previous post as all the front lights have been replaced. We have a couple of handicapped people living up the road from us and one i particular (Peter) who has been watching the build from day 1 and constantly asks me how the yellow truck is going, came over and asked if he could help, so he and Nathan mounted up the radiator grille and fitted the new indicator and park lights, ran the wiring through all the cable clamp into the engine bay ready for me to wire them up. I gave Peter an Airfix model of a FFR Series 3 and Sankey trailer in Desert Sand I had given to me (I'll never around to doing it) and told him to go and put it together for me, well stuff me mushrooms, he came back Sunday night with the model built and painted in black and was as proud as punch, so it looks like I have 2 apprentices now. I have another model there I will give him when we have finished this build. I have access to some high density foam tape, 50mm wide and 3mm thick I was thinking of placing some between the hard top and the tray, has anyone tried this to stop water seeping through??. Also the oil pressure gauge was working before I removed the motor, but seems to have stopped now. I have the one brown wire going to the top of the sender units left hand terminal and nothing on the right hand terminal and another white wire (oil light??) on the bottom of the sender. I have 12 v on them but nothing registers on the gauge, any idea's.
I'll put some photo's up as soon as I can get home before dark and take some.
Cheers Ian

Well, we repainted the roof, had a bugger of a job finding Limestone on the paint shops computer, found a Land Rover colour eventually from the mid 70's that's so close to it, so we went with that. Lucky I painted Saturday as it absolutely persisted down on Sunday. So Sunday was spent hooking up and checking all the electrics, everything worked except for the passenger side headlight (blown sealed beam) so I swapped it for the one off the old guard. Lucky I did as the 3 pin plug on the sealed beam was badly perished and needed replacing, so I swapped out the old one with the one from old guard as well. The heater fan had a blown fuse inside the steering column which was replaced, replaced the flasher (thanks Charlie) unit as the blinkers tried to work with all new wiring but still not great, all good now though. The rain went away after lunch so we fitted the roof on and bolted it down, cleaned all the windows and took it for a run around the block. Now all I have to do is tidy up the wiring for the internal canopy lights and fit the radio/cassette that came out of my old Discovery, fit some new tyres and it's good to go for rego. I have uploaded a couple of photo's of what it looks like and what it looked like just over a year ago when I first found it in a machinery shed. Waddayathink?
Cheers Ian

Pulled the roof lining out 2 weeks ago and it rained foam inside the cab. Took me 3 hours to clean all the foam still stuck to the roof off with thinners and stiff brushes. Then I got some 6mm thick sheet foam rubber (sticky backed) from my sheet metal people and sprayed the aluminum with contact adhesive, relined the roof and the glued the roof lining to the rubber. I then resprayed the lining with vinyl paint, pulled the roof console out of the shed, glued and lined that with black vinyl, screwed it up, painted the sun visors with the same vinyl paint and mounted my old disco/Landrover emblemed radio cassette to the roof console and wired it all up. Mounted speakers behind the seats at roof level on the parcel shelves that are there and turned it on. All worked a treat and looks great. I am going to line the roof in the load space with the same rubber lining and some vinyl to make it all uniform. I then put some waterproof carpet in the back with some 5mm black rubber sheet glued to it to dampen a bit of noise and made a new door card for the passenger door (still got one to make for the drivers side). Unfortunately, when i got into it to put away the damn spring broke in the drivers door latch
and stupid me shut the door to drive it to it's home on the other side of the house and had to crawl out the passenger side door
I have been talking to a contact in UK and he can send me one out for about $80-$85 landed, so that's the next thing to do when it arrives. I am going Landy shopping with Ratel10mm tomorrow, as I found a nice specimen sitting in a paddock out the back of Canungra we are going to have a look at after we visit Mrs HH and check out her managery of vehicles so I might have a crack at the rear roof lining after that and try to get the new barrel lock out of the drivers door without wrecking it. Have a good weekend all.

Just unlocked it with the key, it seemed to jam up a bit and then it went "boing". Have no spring tension in there now and it flops up and down.
Ian
