    stuck starter motor

    Hi everyone,

Some advice needed here. Yesterday I took my SIII 2.25 diesel landy out for a spin from Kalgoorlie to Esperance, in a day! Went like a dream, noisy, but perfect.

This morning when I went to start her, the starter solenoid will not disengage. tried a few times and you have to get out and frantically disconnect the battery.

...it is a brand new reconned started motor. been in there 6 months, hardly used, mostly shes been in the shed while i've been fixing all the steering etc up (at least 4 of the last 6 months).

All help much appreciated. im sure its something simple.

Just about the only thing I can think of is a sticking solenoid or one that has an internal wiring fault. Assuming it worked when first installed, the most likely thing is that the plunger is stuck due to rust, and while the attraction of the magnet is enough to move it in one direction, the spring is not strong enough to move it back. The other possibility is a broken spring.

Try disconnecting the wire from the solenoid to the starter to confirm that it is the solenoid sticking.

I would be inclined to take the starter back to whoever reconditioned it, although if it was too long ago, to a different auto electrician!

Yes I agree JDNSW that i will disconnect the starter solenoid and try starting with a screwdriver (bridging the solenoid caps - my usual method until i aquired the correct size spade adapters) and if it starts and retracts then it is a issue - which i suspect it is....with the ignition switch...even with the key in the 'off' position it still cranks, but once disconnected from the battery it retracts.

i think im going to go back to basics if is the case a rewire with a toggle switch for the accessories and a button for the starter! much cheaper!

(the only issues i've had with the old girl are starter related!)
