    heavily modified overland series.

came across this in pretoria south africa last week. an elderly german couple had modded it and were trekking around africa. not sure what engine it had, but had volkswagen portal axles not sure what off. inside had screens everywhere laptops and gps etc. pretty well set up. the cab had been chopped and raised as you can see. dont know much else as was in a bit of a rush to head up to zim and bots in our newly acquired 300tdi G4 90.

If it has VW portals - these will be off older Kombis.

I assume it's a removable snorkel - the rest seems to be between the bumper & grille.

VW portals! Hope they have lots of spares!!!

While it looks cool, I can't see the point in a really heavily modified touring/expedition vehicle. Imagine trying to find 1950's VW portal spares in the middle of the sahara.

Why would he be looking for 1950's volvo portal spares when he has VW Kombi portals. I would have thought that there would be plenty of old kombis still running around in Africa and probably a few still live in Aust wreckers.

Have a look at the front wheel of the landie - definitely VW stub axles and stud pattern.

Sorry - was trying to do 2 things at once! However Volvo (C303/306) portals would be a LOT stronger!

AFAIK Portals were only fitted to the split windscreen kombis. Check the prices - even for a basket case. Let alone parts!

Btw - "kombi" means "station wagon" in German. If you tell a German that a "VW Bus" is called a "Kombi" in AU, they think you are strange.

A work of art. Cutting the axles would be easy enough. Wonder how the boxes were grafted on and what brakes were used!
Be interesting with one forward gear and four in reverse!
They must have flipped the cwp.

I run a VW bug here with the reduction boxes. They are not bullet proof.

    It's the air intake.
