Depending on the seating capacity on your compliance plate, you will probably need seat belts fitted and a modification plate from an engineer to legally carry people seat in those seats.

By 76 design rules, I believe, specified the number of seats in a vehicle (so if not original, you should need to get engineering approval - but if the number of seats is not on the compliance plate, there is no way it can be shown they were not original!). The side rear seats were optional in Landrovers from 1948 into the nineties, and I am pretty certain that in at least some states they did not require seat belts in 1976 (and hence do not need to be fitted today). But you would need to enquire from the local authority - if you gave your location, you might be able to get some more definite information from others here. Fitting seat belts to them would require engineering approval, but is probably a good idea.

Yeh thanks lads really apreciate the info and im from mackay qld and yeh i payed for it but will i pick it up tomoro maybe, i havent looked at the compliance plates or anything so im unsure and its got ****ty looking safari decals on the side they look original does that mean anything?

I’m really not sure about these seat belts in the back thing. I know the company I work for used to run Toyota troop carriers till about 2008. Don’t know what happened to them, we use buses now. In the troopy’s we’d fit about 11, 8 in the back and 3 in the front as well as a carton or two, there were no seat belts in the back. I thought that the safest way was to sit second from the back door. That way you’ve got one guy as a crumple zone for a rear ender and two guys for cushion in a head on. I don’t think anyone is a winner in a side impact. This didn’t really help did it? But anyway I’d check with your local authority because I’m sure they got rid of them due to a gray area.

I think you will find they replaced them due to OH&S employment reasons rather than anything to do with their legality in the vehicle.

In Qld, your seating capacity must be listed on a compliance plate. Mine says 3 so as I want to put some extra seats in, I will need a blue mod plate ($80 - $130) and yes you will need seatbelts as I believe they became a requirement in the early 70's. If it was used on a farm this may be the reason none are fitted. But they won't register it if it has 7 seats and is complianced for 3. So you will need to check the plate and stick to what that says or get it mod plated. Once it is mod plated, if you remove the rear seats you need to get it plated again (not just a matter of removing the old plate). Also, as I recently found out, in Qld it costs you more to register it with fewer seats than with more seats (go figure?) - a class 6 which is 2-3 seats is $30 a year more for your CTP insurance and thus your rego, than a 7 seater wagon is (class 1). Makes no sense. So more seats actually saves you money.

I find this statement interesting for two reasons - firstly, my 1986 110 does not have the seating capacity on the compliance plate (just says "omnibus"), nor does the 1981 Series 3 I have the remains of, and the 1970 2a I run does not have a compliance plate (but is registered and has been by me for almost twenty years in two states and the army before that).

So I wonder when Queensland required seating capacity on compliance plates which were issued without seating capacity, and when they required compliance plates on vehicles manufactured before these existed? Note that the date (1976) of the vehicle in question is in the period when they were coming into use.
