Len Beadell often refers to fuel vapour locks in his series of books. His remedy was to "spit" a stream of water from his mouth at a specific section of the fuel line that always got too hot and vapourised the fuel. Most, if not all, of Len's excursions were in Series 1. On these the SU electric pump is high up on the firewall, so there is a bigger lift than on the Series 2/3, so more chance of vapour lock because more suction. But the advantage of the electric pump is that it keeps pumping, even when the engine is stopped.
