    SIII gearbox noisy 1st gear.

Just getting my SIII up and running. Both boxes have been recoed and a new clutch. Filled the boxes with 80w90 GL5 with a copper corrosion# of 1b. Tuned up the donk and decided to get the gears oiled up, so main box into 1st and transfer into neutral. Started her up and get excessive (fairly loud for any box) noise from the 1st gear teeth ... no whining and no bearing noises or clunks. Found that if I lever the 1st gear selector forward by about 1mm on the detent, the noise stops completely.
My question is ... can this be adjusted by moving the selector yolk forward along the selector shaft a bit? If not, what are my choices and or what do you think the problem is?
All other fwd gears are whisper quiet, including the transfer intermediate, although, not under load as yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Daryl.

    Hi Steve,

The selector fork was positioned too far to the rear of the box on the selector shaft, toward first, so that when first was selected and the spring loaded ball sat in the detent, the fork was still pushing the cog into misalignment and hence the noise.
Took me two trys to get it, as first try I lifted the lid and measured the throw on the selector shaft where it sat without the detent engaged and adjusted the fork position on the shaft accordingly, but not far enough.
Second try, I just added a mil or so and whallah, no noise. Now, that doesn't mean it'll work correctly, as I still haven't run it under load.
This box was recoed by the previous owner mechanic.

Hope my convoluted description helps somehow.

    Cheers,
    Daryl.
