    Third gear making noises

Well third gear in one of the Games (Banjo) had been making noises and jumping out. It got quite bad a while ago when we took it on a run down into northern NSW with some other GCLRO Series vehicles. So decided to pull it out and have a look. After a lot of effort getting the floor and seatbox out with lots of rusted screws and bolts we got to the stage of draining the oil. I said to Phil, "That sounded like something hard dropped out with that oil" and sure enough this is what came out .

So today we finish getting the box out and I am not looking forward to pulling it apart. Anybody got a good SIII gearbox they don't want?

Well unfortunately I now know what those teeth were from.

This is the layshaft from the gearbox.

Obviously the broken spring in the first post has fallen down the gearbox and jammed up on the layshaft and stripped it quite well. As far as I can work out they are not gear teeth, just basically a high spot on the shaft to position the gear. This photo shows the missing spring, another spring with some damage and some minor damage to the teeth on the inner gear.

SO now I have to look for another layshaft. It does appear that nothing else in the box has really been damaged so I may have got away with minimal damage given how much might have happened. I was sort of half thinking I could get away with putting new springs in and put it back together since there is still enough lip on the layshaft to retain the gear. Not sure that would be a good thing to do though .

    Hi LRO11,

Thanks for the offer but I should have posted earlier that I bought a box off Jim (russellrovers). I will be fitting it as is then getting the parts etc to rebuild the other one as a spare for all the series I have here.

Actually I am curious about the suffixes of the series 3 gearboxes so if anybody knows when they were installed could you let us all know. The box I have just pulled out of the 77 Game is a suffix A box but it seems a little late in series 3 production to still have a suffix A as a genuine item. So it suggests that it may have been replaced at some stage. Or were they really still using the first series 3 box in 1977 and then they got up to suffix D or E by the time they finished which was only 5 years or so later?
