    Smile Fuel - what to use?

    Gday, Re: series 3, petrol 2.25L. Whats the best fuel to use? Premium fuel? Are the valves and seats able to tolerate modern unleaded fuel. if not is there an additive i should use? cheers wallydog

    The engine will be quite happy running on unleaded and won't suffer valve-seat-recession, despite what some people will say.

    I always think the best petrol available is the best to use, but the only way to find out, is to do a trial over an extended period and see if there is any significant fuel consumption difference,

    anything from avgas down to grain alcohol. if its a bit off on the fuel you've got just tweak the dizzy timing and the mix to suit.

    keros above avgas, being nearer to diesel or avtur.

    BUT thin it down a bit or drain the coolant and it will run it.

    I have used kerosene offroad, mixed at about 50/50 with petrol. It would start from cold that way.

    Forty-five years ago I was working on a survey crew in the Gulf country - the rather indolent surveyor snaffled a full jerrican of fuel to save filling his. It had been filled with kerosene for the cook. Having run the tank dry he refuelled from the jerrican. He and his offsider had a long walk after the 2.25 refused to start on kerosine.

    Once unleaded is replaced with E10 in NSW/ACT later in the year, you may have to switch to Premium Unleaded due the possible issues of Ethanol on older rubber components in the fuel system.

    Yes, I would agree with that, we in Qld have had E10 for a while now and I can confirm that it, and AC mechanical fuel pumps are not friends a lot of older car/truck owners are fitting Facit Electronic pumps, not real cheap but US made and good.


    Any fuel from 91 octaine upwards with suit the 2.25 motor eng timing at 6 deg Before Top Dead Centre (6*BTDC)
