    Bellhousing removal

series III, swb gearbox has been removed, transfer has been removed.

I cant get the bellhousing off? Do I need to remove the clutch bearing sleeve housing there? w

thanks Chazza. did that and it came off. Good so far. Theres a lot of parts in a gearbox pull down. I busted my circlip pliers so didnt get the mainshaft out.

Ive separated the transfer, front drive unit and bellhousing. The needle roller cage is broken on the layshaft. The thrust washers on the transfer idler are flogged out. end play is way over spec.

Is it procedure to change out the needle roller bearings in the transfer idler gear? They are not broken and needles intact and smooth. But seems a sloppy fit when assembled. Are they by nature like that? The transfer shaft has rough and noisy housing bearings. Ill prob change them out. W.

The intermediate shaft needle rollers have a hard life and are usually skewed in their cages. I usually replaced them whenever I pulled the box down. IME the best are the genuine LR items which come in a brown plastic cage.

Thanks isuzurover, the bellhousing mainshaft bearing has quite a bit of sloppy play too. Are genuine LR parts generally available for the S3 gearbox? Im worried about putting in inferior non gen parts but I feel im at the mercy of the usual suspect suppliers.

Should I source all bearings through a bearing shop where quality can be somewhat gauged? Or should i just buy the kits on offer and go with that. Its just another worry! I think Ive spoken about this earlier? W.

I always bought bearings from LR parts places, however would ask for the best quality they had (most places carry a couple of different quality levels). I had much more problems with inferior quality gears than bearings. Also - the 3-4 brass bush - don't buy the 2-piece one.

Gary Gjerde does kits for both the gearbox and transfer case.
They always have Bearmach parts which seem to be good quality.
He's a top bloke to deal with as well!
