It's from an early SIIa 88" the A suffix was used from October 1961 until March 1963. (Although that said most Australian assembled SIIa had 109 series engine numbers, so your engine likely came in on a UK assembled 88".)

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Engine number

Great, thanks Diana, A UK assembled '88. I got a little inquisitive as I was looking at the unused probably broken temp sender which appears to be bobbing around? near the thermostat housing. No sign of water leaking? Are those things supposed to bob around or are they supposed to be secured to the little metal plate with 3 screws holding it down?

It has a temp sensor on the other side of the thermostat there. The engine could be older than me..... W.

The temperature sensor with three screws is the thermal switch for the cold start warning light. Should be fitted to all Rover petrol engines up to at least late S3.

    Hi,

    My 1971 SWB has a similar number:241 548 80A.

As far as i know the motor is original but that is far from definite. WilE has a similar case with a military SWB of a similar vintage, as did Colonel Coleman. I'm pretty sure they are all CKD vehicles.

I'm not sure if this helps at all, but just thought I would share.

Thanks John, Ill investigate further. Its a 12/74 SIII SWB. Theres a wire to a sensor just under the thermostat drivers side, on the other side(thermal switch) there is a remnant of a wire connection to one of the plate screws. Is that the correct spot for the wire connection? Or should the wire be on the mechanical thermal switch? W.

Your post is not clear. There should be a wire from the temperature sensor screwed into the driver's side of the thermostat housing, this goes to the temperature gauge. There should also be a wire from the thermal switch to the left of the thermostat housing, going to the switch on the choke control. This is not under one of the three screws attaching it to the head, but to a tag in the middle of it.

My 1969 2a's original motor is 24102132A. It is an 8:1 compression motor (proved by a large number 8 stamped on the boss half way along the top of the head above the manifolds) and needs to be timed accordingly.
