The ones I have seen is the oil filler is on the tappet cover and run smoother
Gday all,
I have been reading a lot lately, dangerous stuff. But what I have been reading tells me that apparently in 1980 the Series III 2.25, both petrol and diesel, changed to five bearing cranks?
Now my question is how do you identify a five bearing crank 2.25 petrol to a pre 1980 2.25 petrol. The reason I ask is that I have been looking at a 1981 Series III but he has had an engine change from diesel to a 2.25 petrol and I want to know if it is a pre or post 1980 engine. Any info is appreciated.
Cheers,
David

As far as I know there were no (or very very limited) sales of the 5 bearing engine here in Australia by Landrover. So any 5 bearing engine will be in a full import vehicle or have been bought in separately from the UK. The dates you have there are for UK home market vehicles.
So it is very unlikely that it will be a 5 bearing but I have to admit I don't know how to tell, though I know there are others here who do so I am sure some advice will be coming.

As Timj says, no five bearing engined vehicles appear to have been assembled in Australia, so any five bearing engines that have come in will have done so in either fully assembled vehicles (typically 109 wagons, almost all of which by then were either V8 or Isuzu, so unlikely), or private imports, usually owners migrating - not very many of them.
I understand that the easiest way of distinguishing five bearing engines is the presence of external reinforcing ridges on the crankcase. Late engines had the oil filler on the rocker cover, but I cannot find from the parts book that this change coincided with the five bearing crank, and in any case, the rocker covers are interchangeable!
