    Recovery Points

Planning a trip to the beach tomorrow and whilst packing my snatch strap I had a look around to see where I'd actually attach it. You know, "hope for the best, prepare for the worst".

    Anyways, I couldn't find anywhere.

So, where do you attach a snatch strap to a '79 Series 3 SWB?

    Cheers

    around the chassis

Don't attach it directly to the bumper bar, as it will bend far too easily and can bend the dumb irons together.

Look at passing the eye of the strap under the bumper, then up one side of the chassis rail across over the top, then back down the other side of the rail, to join up with the strap with a decent size shackle underneath.

Watch out for any sharp edges that may cut the strap and make sure to use a damper over the strap when pulling, in case of failure.
Pulling directly inline and under the side chassis rail, should be the least stressful way to pull on a Land Rover frame.

The back does pose more of a problem, if the draw hitch isn't up to it.
Don't fasten the snatch strap directly through the hole for the PTO, as the chassis has a sharp edge facing forward on the bottom of that cross member and it will cut the strap easily.

If I was forced to select a rear hitch point, I would look again, to go around a suitably strong part of the chassis, by going around the top of the mount for the rear spring shackle. Again! Watch out for any edges that may cut the strap.

Please note: these are only suggestions, If you are shown a better way of attaching the strap, then use your own discretion and above all, be safe! When pulling, don't charge off at a stupid pace, as things will break if unnecessary force is attempted.

    Cheers Arthur

I Just pass a d shackle through the eye of my military tie down points. This bolts directly through the bumper to the chassis so I doubt it's gonna hurt the vehicle. Perhaps you could find some or fab your own

grab some chain and some shackles.

take 2 pieces of chain and on both sides pass the chain through between the spring and the chassis, shackle the 2 ends of the chain together, then using another shackle attach the 2 loops of chain together (making an equalising bridle) and recover off of the bridle.

Thanks guys. Bit more thought involved here, I think.

Still went to the beach, though........and did get stuck within spitting distance of the beach entry.

Not one person stopped to give help! Too busy charging past and worrying about themselves than anyone else. Nearly knocked one of my kids down.

FFS what is it with people!!

Anyways, let some more air out of the tyres and eventually managed to reverse back up the track for another successful attempt.

Looks like my clutch is slipping now (which I think is the reason I got bogged in the first place). Clutch pedal also sticks down sometimes and needs my foot underneath it to nudge it all the way up.

    Anyways, pic attached

Glad all went well. It's a shame, no matter how many people I stop and help no one has done it for me
