    Importing series 3: what rules apply for historic plates?

    Hi all,

    We moved a year ago from Belgium to Australia and are now bringing over our Series 3 LWB from 1974 (see series.jpg).

    We bought the car a couple years back and restored it completely (replaced the chassis and bulkhead, and repainted it). At the moment the car is on a container ship and will arrive in Sydney in a couple of days.

    We're thinking of getting it registered as a historic vehicle to to save money (we have another car (range rover 1985) and it's just so expensive to own a car in NSW!). Do you guys know what the yearly cost in for registering a historic vehicle? I read on the lroc website that compulsory insurance is compulsory. Any idea how much this is / year? Is this compulsory with every club?

    Also, does anyone know the exact rules for driving a vehicle with historic plates? Do all rides have to be to/from a club event, or can you also take it out for a short ride on a sunny Sunday afternoon? :-)

    i have a few cars on historic. it depends a lot on how lenient your club is.
    you are supposed to only drive them on club events/days but can take them out on the occasion once notifying the club registrar. and they can be driven within 10km of where it is garaged for 'tune ups' whenever you please. our club (maitland) also has club runs on wednesdays and sundays, so on those days you can meet up at the start of the day then go your own way all day. so very flexible.

    Thanks, that helps.
    I'll take a look for a club somewhere closer by (we live in Picton).
    Having to drive to Sydney every time for a club event every time is a bit of a pain :-).

    By the way: if we would go for normal license plates, is there any way to get a cheap green slip + third party insurance? I checked with NRMA and it would cost me around $1000 :-(.

    Reason I am asking: my parents are coming over for New Year, and we were thinking of going camping with them with the Series 3. This won't be possible with historic license plates I guess...

    No it won't..unless you make it a club trip, then anyone in the club can go....we do this all the time up here so we can take our special registered vehicles out.


    there are different systems in every state and territory in Aus

    we are, a bit of a pain..QLD seems pretty simple though

    thinking of changing your location soon

    Does anyone know of an oldtimer club south of Sydney which has weekly trips on either Saturday or Sunday? We live in picton, and clubs I found here in southern highlands either have no weekly runs, or only during weekdays. Or should I start my own club? ;-)
