    Jumping out of second gear

    Good Afternoon,

I am having problems with 2nd gear jumping out during the overrun on my 1976 SIII Game. Having looked through a range of trusty manuals, I have pulled up the floor and have been inspected the detent spring for 1st-2nd gear selector shaft. The spring isn't broken and I have observed the ball "lifting" the most when second gear is selected. What do I do next?

    Hi Ben,

Welcome and if you want to post any information about your Game then have a look in the sticky posts at the top of the page. Always great to see another one on here.

I had the same trouble with mine and solved it for a while by just putting a washer underneath the detent spring. Probably the same sort of effect as putting a new spring in, just tightens it up a little. That worked for quite a while until just recently it started to do it again in low range. I believe that the ultimate cause of it is the face of the selector fork wearing and allowing it a little movement. A new fork or resurfacing is required.

Jumping out of 2nd and first gear on overun is a common problem with all series 3 boxes bar suffix D models and is caused by som of the synchro dog teeth wearing tapered on the coast side of the teeth. If you remove the gearbox top, in any gear bar 2nd with one rear wheel off the ground and the clutch pedal depressed, turn the hand brake drum until you see a group of synchro dog teeth that are thicker than the others, and you should notice that one side of these teeth is worn tapered.

    Tried the easy fix...

Thanks for the advise, I tried Tim's solution and though it did tighten things up a lot, it didn't work. When selecting second gear, it seams to go into fine, then move forwards by about a cm under what seems to be spring tension. This happens even with the car stationary. I guess the top will have to come off then.

    Thanks

    Ben

It might be worth removing the rectangular steel cover plate from the top of the transfercase to check that the mainshaft nut hasn't broken its lock tab and unwound a couple of turns.

I dont think selector forks are there to hold the gear in. That is the job of the detent and spring. As Wagoo says wear on the teeth is the problem.

    Jumping out of second gear

So I finally got round to replacing the gearbox oil on the weekend and after removing the sump plug, I found I could fill a little bag with pieces of cogs. I am guessing that might have something to do with the problem.
