No; the brass plug is to retain the spring and plunger for one of the selector rods.

The black disc, is where the filler cap used to be on the earlier boxes, such as the S1.

The bung on the side is the filler/level plug I think.

When I did my S3 axles and boxes, I noticed none of the published quantities in the manual seemed to match what actually got poured into them,

Got a bit of a loose metal sort of rattle when it's up in revs in each gear, so I want to check, drain and start again. It seems to be coming from the bell housing area. I have removed the floor as you can see and will attack it tomorrow or Saturday to track the noise down. Hopefully I dont have to remove the gearbox.

Just pulled it all apart, the oils were low in the gearbox and transfer case, replaced same. The uni joint closet to the transfer case for the front drive is Ted's brother (Roo). Got it all out and apart, that lock nut on the spline can be a bugger to get undone can't it. Now it's off to the shop for a new uni joint
(maybe) or I can start Christmas eve party drinks with the neighbours and friends early.

Hiya Ian,
I had a "loose metal sort of rattle" in my donor gearbox. When I pulled it apart I found the needle roller bearing between the Primary Pinion and Main Shaft had broken down - the rollers coming out of one end of the cage plate. I'm now looking to find a supplier. Easy to replace, although it does mean the gearbox has to come out and apart. Interestingly, the ground up cage plate was pretty much ground down to nothing with very, very few pieces large enough to recognise as anything. Mostly just shiny oil.
Hope your's isn't the same although then again it's easy to fix - once you get a replacement bearing anyway.
