No worries Wrinklearthur and Mrs. hh
OK so the mystery continues
On a silver plate under the bonnet there is the following:
This vehicle was manufactured by Leyland Motor Corporation of Australia LTD.to comply with Australia Design Rules Nos
1-2-3-4C-5B-6-7-8-11-12-15
28A-30-35A
Land Rover Hardtop 4 CYL DIES
LBCAG1AF 58101
5/81 GVM 2760KG SEAT CAP 3
This plate is affixed with the approval of the Australian Motor Vehicle Certification Board
And the VIN plate from the firewall is pictured hopefully![]()
Hi there,as some may have seen I,ve got myself a 109 that I,m pretty sure originated from Australia but has somehow ended up back in Blighty
I,ve tried to research a bit of her history but I,m not getting far as the V.I.N number is not tallying up with a great deal.
She was declared new on coming back to the UK by the importer but she was definately assembled in Australia! Now,the number I,ve got on the firewall goes as follows:
LB ( series 3,lightweight,stage 1)
C (109 and 1 ton)
A (truck cab, soft top or hard top)
G (2.25 diesel
1 (RHD/4 speed)
A (up to 1983/1984)
F (CKD - complete knock down)
then some numbers
I,m thinking that she may be earlier than the 1982 plate she has.
Any idea how I can research things further would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers![]()
I've read your other post about your vehicle: the Australian compliance plate is about the best indication as to when the vehicle was assembled 5/81 is May 1981. As to why it was shipped to the UK as a 'new' vehicle could be a long standing LR thing: I've read about one of the last Disco 1's being shipped back to the UK after not selling in another country for 18 odd months - I remember this as the new owner wrote about minor problems with the 300tdi, ( zero K's on the clock) then did not meet emission regulations for new vehicles. He had to get an exemption and put later dated plates on it.
It could be that your vehicle met the same fate: unsold and shipped back to the UK as a back load ( ie cheap).
AFAIK there are no records available to the public from the Pressed Metal Corp ( The name of the assemblers at the time up to 85) and I doubt that the current arm of LR in Aust. would have the records either.
Of course I could be wrong
The compliance plate confirms that it was Australian assembled (with significant local content). The reason it was exported to the UK is probably that by that date sales of the 2.25 diesel would not have been doing very well, being largely replaced by the 3.9 (Isuzu engined) Stage 1 diesel, a development that may not have been accurately forecast at the time the CKD packages were ordered. ( maybe years earlier!) In this scenario, its export to the UK could well be long after assembly.
You are likely to find significant detail differences from the home market model of that date, the most significant being that I expect it has the three bearing rather than five bearing engine. It is also likely that the wheels are Australian made, and there may well be other differences.

Thanks for the replies .Much appreciated.
Now the only problem I,ve got is that according to the ad that I bought the Landie from is she has only been in the country 18 months!
Now it is possible that the statement in the ad is rubbish as a lot in the ad turned out to be but I guess I may have to attempt to find the importers via the DVLA here![]()
