Sorry to all for swearing in my last post Being what I guess you would class a bikie it sort of flows out of my mouth without thinking about it.

Anyhoo back to the Landie.................no chassis number on the spring hanger due to the fitment of a new dumb iron at some stage in her life so I suppose the trail ends there

Shame but thats life .Just gonna crack on with the necessary repairs and enjoy her.

Normally when a landrover chassis no. starts with a series of letters, it should begin with SAL

Adding this to your number you get

    SAL Manufacturer: Land Rover
LB Model: Series 3 (early Stage 1)
    C Wheelbase: 109 inch (lwb)
A Body type: 2-door: Pickup, hood cab, truck cab, or soft/hard top
G Engine type: 2.25 litre diesel (model 10J)
1 Steering and transmission: Right-hand drive (RHD), 4-speed manual (LT95, or other)
A Model year: 1979 to 1987 (All models)
F Assembly location: Completely Knocked Down (CKD), non-UK location
    508101 Serial number

You mention looking for the chassis number on the dumb irons. Not on Australian built vehicles. Left rear spring hanger.

Oh and your adr codes are for

    1 Reversing Signal Lamps
    2 Door Latches and Hingers
3 Seat Anchorages for Motor Vehicles
    4c Seat Belts
    5b Seat Belt Anchorages
    6 Direction Turn Signal Lamps
    7 Hydraulic Brake Hoses
    8 Safety Glass
    11 Internal Sun Visors
12 Glare Reduction in Field of View
    15 Demisting of Windscreen
    28a Motor Vehicle Noise
30 Diesel Engine Exhaust Smoke Emissions
    35a Commercial Braking System

These Adr's are consistant with a early 80's vehicle.

where's Sherlock when we need him?

    Hi Perdix

On most Land Rover's built in Australia, the actual chassis number is stamped horizontally, on the outside of the left hand side rear spring bracket, just above the top bolt for the shackle plates.

I am now that curious, I could jump on the back of one of those flying kangaroo and come over for a look.

Stop Press !! just read Col.Coleman's reply.

That does explain it, This plate would have been added about the time that VIN numbers first came in, so may be they didn't add the SAL at that time or it may not have been a requirement to do so then.

Have a look at the chassis number anyway, the ride on the back of the flying Kangaroo is a bit bouncy for me.

If it is Australian-assembled, the number may be on the outside of the LH rear back spring hanger.

Did some checking. Seems 81 was a special year for Land Rover Numbers.

Up to 1980, Chassis numbers started with numbers.

In 81, was when the letters started. All the ones inducted into the Australian Army built in 81 are as per your chassis no.

From 1/82, the SAL prefix was put at the front and has been there ever since.

Bit more info has come my way and it now appears that the 109 may have ended up at some point in its life in South Africa!

Just to expand on the Colonel's reply: All the LR taken in by the Army in 81 had the same sort of VIN number. Had it been in the Military I imagine REMLR would have found it by now. Besides, if yours been made for the Army it would have some reasonable differences to a normal vehicle.

    Again - pics will help.
