    Willys weekender

G'day all, well I'd been driving Willy around town for a while during Christmas and after everything flooded at home in eltham on christmas day I decided we were due for a weekend away together! all that water reminding me of past trips.
We headed off to Jamieson again, last time I was up there Willy kept stalling on the steepest of hills! I gave him a 16inch thermofan hoping that some fresh cool air would keep the engine happy. He did pretty well on the way there considering he drove for 5hrs on a 35 smth degree day! Still wouldn't get up those hills.. driving home however was a terrible experience.. stalling multiple times up the Melba Hwy! having to remove the fuel line and pump petrol into the carb after every stall. I think the problem is still a high underbonnet temp around the carb so thinking about wrapping the exhaust and adding a donaldson air box on the roof.. will try and move the fuel line too. we removed the bonnet for the drive home, turned some heads with it on the roof but kept him cool and running very well!
Only have this pic of him at Booni doon, both car and driver needing a much needed rest!

A few more details on Willy may help with diagnosis. Engine type? Carburator and fuel pump type?
If it's fuel starvation then there is a blockage or restriction somewhere or the valves in the pump are weak. Blockages can in many instances be cleared by taking the air cleaner elbow off the carburator, revving the engine up and blocking the carb with the palm of your hand. Is the breather on your fuel filler cap clear?
2 1/4 litre engines (if fitted) dont need much to keep them cool ( See heater improvement thread below). Is your thermostat ok? Is the shroud still fitted to the radiator? Chaff or mud clogging radiator fins? Radiator clean internally?

Cheers Perdix, here's a pic of one. Planning to mount it on the front left qaurter or possibly on the roof?
Willy has a 2.25 petrol with the 36iv Zenith, i suspect the problem may be that I've had a pod filter directly on the Carby.
The under bonnet temprature seems to get pretty hot and having the air intake just above the exhaust manifold is not what he needs on a hot day?
Willy has what I think is a larger radiator than standard (I've had reconditioned) Flushed the block and heater box, 16inch thermo fan, all new hoses, new thermostat, new fuel pump, checked timing and tuning multiple times.
The water pump i figure works fine as when the engine is started after resting the high temprature reading quickly drops. I reckon it's got to be that bloody pod filter sucking in hot air, that would explain the stalling on steap hills and possibly the engine getting too hot? I hope it is cause i'm pretty well out of ideas!!!! It is interesting that you say they don't need much cooling... I'll look into that
    Cheers Bill

Well i thought I might add to this thread after doing abit of work on the old boy. I started by draining the radiator. Nice green coolent drained out but I noticed some sediment just inside the radiator, so I flushed it out with some clean water it come out the bottom an awful awful brown... I'm wondering If this is a sign of a possible blockage somewhere? or just enough sediment to restrict the flow of water? I've pulled the water pump off, it seems to spin freely but sounds like its binding a little. Not sure how to tell a good one from a bad but I reckon for what they cost I'll just get a replacement. The last thing I noticed was that the it had a 16psi Radiator cap on, the land rover bible reckons it needs a 9psi cap. would the increased operating pressure be part of the problem ? Any thoughts would be great!

    P.S Happy Australia day!!

When you say 'stalling on steepest hills' could it be something to do with the float in the carby tilting due to the angle it's on ???
    Just a thought

G'day Stu, that was my first thought but I'd been to this area before.. Willy was stalling on hills that I've driven up previously without any dramas. The only real change was climate and possibly operating temp. I hope the stalling is because of vaporisation and that fixing the cooling system and moving the intake will sort it out.

Had a similar problem with my brothers Volvo many years ago. Cruised okay on the flat but as soon as we started up the hills she'd fart around and almost stall. Could not reproduce it sitting still. A mechanic with us pulled the carbs apart and found no problems. Turned out to be a blocked inline fuel filter. A couple of dollars for a new one and problem solved.

Exactly the same problem with a Mazda 808 many years ago, except we did stall on the hills. Mazda wanted A$12 for the new filter. Ford wanted $7 for exactly the same filter...

    G'day All,
I haven't owned a S3 for a number of years, but I would put money on the fuel filter that is mounted on the firewall behind the engine, if this is so you would be suffering from fuel vapour lock, just my tuppence worth cheers Dennis
