Anywhere to get a new screen (other than O'Briens!)

    Hello,

The series 3 I bought has a broken passenger side screen. Can anyone recommend a place to pick one up at a reasonable price - preferably in the Melbourne area.

I have called a well known windscreen place and they wanted $180 for supply only!

I also tried a glass company (its only flat safety glass i thought) - when they found out it was for a car they politely declined to supply...

    Help / advice appreciated.

    Chris

I know it's in Sydney but in Wetherill Park at the end of Davis Rd theres a glass supplier that specialises in construction equipment glass work (earthmovers etc) They are generally all flat and they cut to size from sheets for each job rather than buying ready made. Might be an option if theres someone down your way that does the same.

being flat, a glass manufacturer may be able to do. i have a 1924 Amilcar that has a strange flat screen shape and i gave a cardboard template to them and they handed me back the screens, complete with the correct autoglass label sandwiched in it. I believe every official screen that is made has a unique number that is on that 'sticker' sandwiched in the glass. Pretty sure it was a fair bit less than $180, but then it was back in the 90's. But that sounds like a shocking quote - I reckon a full width curved screen for my 60's mercedes was less than that. Instant windscreens in Adelaide I note claim to be cheaper. Moores glass used to be a big classic car glass supplier in the eastern states and specialised in hard to get glass (not that a landy should be)

Chris. There is a bloke who advertises in the LROCV magazine. Calls himself "Quality Fit Auto Glass" Says in add that he specialises in LR.

Any rural town will usually have several places that are set up to cut (and approve) flat glass to specification for tractors etc. Simple dimensions will suffice for this glass, as three of the four corners are right angles. But don't expect it to be cheap! The size is pretty irrelevant, the cost is because as far as they are concerned it is a one-off, with a lot of labour input.

Two points worth noting though. Most Series Landrovers have toughened rather than laminated glass, which would have been legal until late S3, and there must be a lot of these about. (I have at least eight!), although there is significant labour in removing the glass from the frame, as you probably realise. Toughened glass does have some advantages, especially for a LH screen - it is harder than laminated glass, and hence harder to scratch, and is also a lot stronger and hence harder to break, although when it breaks it shatters.

The second point is that all glass in a motor vehicle (there is a start date but I think it is before all Landrovers) must have an approved permanent mark certifying that it is approved. This is why a simple piece of flat safety glass is so expensive and why the glass company declined to supply.

These guys did a good job on mine.
    Windscreen Power
It's just flat sheet. They cut it to size on site.

    Thanks for everyones input

    Hello all,

Many thanks for all your suggestions.

I had read a thread from the UK that someone had got 4 screens cut for 20 pounds - this was made me hopeful of getting something cheap!

As I need a roadworthy and am worried about compliance I have changed my mind about getting one cut and bought a Britpart screen from Britcar in North Mebourne. It was around $100 and I thought this was a bit more realistic for a screen.

They are also helping me out with a few more bits and peices too.

Now to try and fit it without dropping it!

Once I get the roadworthy if i ever break another one I will come here!

Dimensions are in the most recent post for my Series. My windscreens are both new and do not have the mark certifying they are for automotive use. Instead i have a certificate from the glazier saying it is fit for automotive use. They are both toughened.
I don't know the cost as the windscreens were a birthday present.
