thankyou everyone
i think i may go for greater diameter, although narrower, bar tread setup.
due to the range of country i will be traversing, prob will end up being the better option.

I run these on my daily driver, they are very well behaved on road and great in the mud and in the paddocks on the farm. 14ply so very durable I haven't staked one yet 
They are an Otani S-78 in a 7.50R16 and I got them for about $180 a tyre

Are you sure they're7.50R . They don't look like radials .

You are correct mate, they are cross-plys, my mistake it's just a force of habit to put the 'R' in. They are still an excellent tyre

where did you get them?
They look perfect for what i need- chuck the mud, float on the sand, grab the asphalt, and cling to the rocks. Brilliant.

I bought some some of those s78 for my BJ40 because they looked like the old BS Jeep Service, they were bloody awful, 14 ply is way too high for my liking, they are for a Dyna tip truck or similar truck with dual rear wheels.
Being 14ply even lowering the pressure to 15psi for mud work they hardly squished any at all with the SWB weight. But true, you would be hard pressed to stake them. If they made them in 6ply or even 8ply they would be great.
I sold them on ebay and got some 750R16 Dunlop SuperGrippers which cost a little more but much better on and off road.
