    11" brakes.....

    Hello from Brisbane.

I realise that the issue of swapping 109" model brakes on to 88" vehicles has had a fair airing (e.g. Landy Girl thread recently), but it is in my planning to do just that.

I understand that the the 6 cylinder S3 models have an 11" X 3" front drum and 11" X 2.5" rear drum arrangement, as well as the dual slave cylinders up front and single at the back. The 6 cylinder 2A models might have only had a 2.5" wide front drum perhaps?

Anyway, I am planning to go for 3" front, 2.5" rear drums and source second hand backing plates and drums for the job, but will only use new parts for the rest. I am also assuming that the master cylinder will need to be changed over to a 109" model as well, possibly with a vacuum booster.

    My questions are:

    - whether the front backing plates for the 3" drums are different to those for models that carry 2.5" front drums?

    - the tolerance allowed for machining the braking surface of used brake drums on the relevant Land Rover models - it is an issue for selecting or rejecting used disc rotors, so I am assuming that it might be an issue for selecting used drums?

    - will a 109" master cylinder with vacuum booster fit in a SWB S3 without modification to the pedal assembly box or guards? Or is that only an issue for putting these units into S2 and 2As or if a dual circuit system is used?

    Cheers,

    • AFAIK all 6 cyl and Stage 1 (V8 & Isuzu) had 3" front brakes, no matter if they were SIIa or SIII.
    • The mastervac (booster on the pedalbox) was introduced some time after the 6 cyl IIRC Suffix G SIIa. Before that they had an inline booster (Clayton-Dewandre or PBR VH24 or VH44).
    • The backing plate for the 3" is different to the 2 1/2" because the cylinders are centred on the shoes.
    • You need to get the correct drums for your wheel studs (9/16" BSF or 16mm) but you can use SIIa 3" backing plates with SIII 3"drums or vice versa.
    • The for the early type pedalbox with the inline booster, the master cylinder is the same whether you have 2 1/2" or 3" front brakes.
    • New brake drums are relatively inexpensive and standard shoes easy to get, IMHO the additional cost of O/S shoes and machining of the drums is not justified when new ones are so cheap
    Hope this helps

It is very simple and easy to drill out the stud holes on the drums. I did it when I fitted S3 hubs.

Btw - S3 hubs are a worthwhile upgrade!

    Hi LWB123,

I have bought new drums from FWD motors in Fairfield for less than they were available on ebay. That was standard 10" drums for a SWB but it would be worth giving them a call for a price. I have also bought a complete brake kit from Paddocks in the UK that included all pads, cylinders, springs and screws for all four wheels and it was a pretty good price. Yet again it was for the standard 10" brakes but they would have them for all of them.

    Cheers,

You will need to change the Drivers side guard and mounting bracket to use the series 3 booster and master. Otherwise you will need to fit a remote booster.

    Hello again.

So, the side guard has to be changed even for a Series 3 SWB for the booster and cylinder swap?

    Cheers,

No. All Series 3 guards allow room for it. The remark was applicable to Series 2a.

I have S3 booster fitted to 88" 1961 2A..I only needed to hand cut a small amount off the guard near the booster to make it fit. The horizontal guard above the wheel just in front of the booster did not need any adjustment...I also have 11" front brakes...works well. Booster photos attached hopefully. Les

    Hello again from Brisbane.

I thought that was the case from some earlier threads, so felt I should get clarification in case I was wrong - not an uncommon state of affairs according to my wife and kids.......

    Cheers,
