Thread: Simpson in a III- Spare Tyre Carriage

    Hi Folks,
Bonnet change-over is in the final stages. I've fitted the spare wheel the way I think it should go, but I'm wondering what the little horns on the ends of the hold-down lugs are for (see third picture). If I've got it right, then the long horns provide the spacing between the bonnet and the rim, but the small horns on the other end appear to have no purpose. Maybe there's some other way of fitting them?
    Regards

(Yes I'm going to paint the inside of the rim- looks crappy like it is)

My understanding is that the little horns are to hold the wheel securely (by turning over) either without a tyre or with a flat tyre. I think you will find that they lift the flat bit just enough to allow for the thickness of the wheel centre pressing.

I'd often wondered that myself, thanks John!

    Hi Coop

I used to use the short side for 6.00 x 16" tyre and flipped them over to use the long side for the 7.50 x 16" tyre.

    Hello from Brisbane.

That had been my understanding of the design - use for either wheel type. Hadn't thought about flat tyres, but that makes sense too.

    Cheers,

Well, how about that! It never would have occurred to me, but I probably would have figured it if I'd had to secure a flat tyre...

    Thanks folks, another mystery solved!

About 10 years ago, the (now) wife and I did a north to south trip in our '77 S3, we had the spare on the bonnet like you now have, and just a spare tyre on the back tail gate strapped on and a couple of tyre irons and a compressor in the back.

We never had to use it luckily, but it cut down on a bit of weight and we didn't need a special set up to carry it...

Not a bad idea- except that with my weight and strength I'd have to have tyre irons 8' long....

    Solid Ally rivets.

The same principles apply to assembling any of the ally-steel parts of a series, sanding back the ally and applying the sikaflex are a me thing, I do it because it prevents "chafing" of the paint where the components flex over each other/.
    Hello Blknight, & Others

Looks like I have to do a bonnet swap on my latest beastie as the front crossmember which the bonnet stand is fitted to it has more holes than Swiss Cheese. I have a great spare bonnet in the shed however someone has taken the spare tyre holder off it. Luckily I have another bonnet which also has rusty frames but it does have a spare tyre holder. So what would have been a 5 minute swap could take a little longer - yep that Murphy bloke strikes again!

So when I walk into my friendly hardware store what size, type of metal and name of rivets should I be looking for on the box's label?

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

I doubt if you will get the correct size alloy rivets from a local hardware store. They 3/16 x about 1/2 long. If you are going to use pop rivets 3/16 x 1/2 would probally be the right size. Or the other optin is 3/16 or 5mm diameter bolts about 5/8 of an inch long.
