I heard back from the ebay seller already. His response was "each stabiliser will power two gauges, three at a push".
Looks like I'll need to buy a second one for my auxillary gauges.
Hello All,
I managed to grab some spare time in between some unplanned domestic duties today – well I certainly didn’t plan them! I was able to trace back some of the wires to and from the mystery box.
Green Wire into Red wires
At the moment there is a green wire that bridges between a terminal each of the fuel gauge and the temperature gauge. This green wire then travels behind the instrument cluster and along the dash board until it joins with some red wires that connect to one side of the mystery box. Different red wires the come out of the other side of the mystery box and then lead off towards the centre instrument cluster where there is an Oil temperature gauge, an Amps gauge and an el-cheapo version of a dual fuel and water temperature gauge. Baldrick has two fuel tanks. The auxiliary fuel and temp gauge have not worked since I bought Baldrick.
Black Wires
Then there are a lot of earth wires that link the gauges and then go via the mystery box and then join into the black socket on the far left side of the main instrument cluster where the original trouble light plugs into.
Red Wires that stay Red
There is also a series of red wires that connect the gauges from the centre instrument cluster the wire then goes into one side of the mystery box and then come out the other side. It then connects to a plastic fuse holder which contains a single glass tube fuse. The red wire then travels over the steering column and joins the fuses at the bottom of the steering column.
Blue Wire
There is a blue wire that goes from the back of the aux fuel gauge that I think looks like it leads off down to the fuel sender on the passenger side aux fuel tank. I have yet to confirm this as it means pulling out the passenger side bucket seat.
Wires that go nowhere
Oh plus there are a couple of terminal blocks with wires bridging between terminals and a couple more wires that have been cut off and tapped up and what they connect to I wouldn't have a clue.
Mystery Box
From the looks of it the mystery box is a homemade version of a voltage stabiliser. There is no sign of the original male and female wire connectors that used to connect to the original voltage stabiliser that is meant to go behind the speedo. I will try to sort out the mystery box because it looks like at one stage it happily controlled the two water temperature gauges; two fuel gauges an oil temperature gauge and an amp gauge.
If I can't sort the mystery box issues I will revert back to the original wiring scheme so I can get the main fuel and temperature gauge working in the instrument cluster around the steering wheel.
When I am closer down the track of getting Baldrick back on the road again I will upgrade the el-cheapo auxiliary gauges and either have a go at sorting out the old mystery box or replace the whole lot with a couple of the electronic voltage stabilisers that Captain Funbeard posted up on this thread. All the fun of the fair.
Hopefully there will be less domestic chores on tomorrow and I will be able trace the circuits with a test lamp and multimeter and at least get the main fuel and temp gauges operational again.
Kind Regards
Lionel
If you can move your fuel level sender, then hooking a multimeter set to read resistance (Ohms) across from the sender output wire terminal to the base of the unit (which should also have a terminal for earthing it) should show a changing resistance as you move the sender up and down. If not, then the sender is broken.
