Hello again from Brisbane.
My 88" presently has 7.00 X 16" tyres, but will eventually be refitted with 7.50 X 16" tyres. Presumably it was delivered new wearing 6.00 X 16" rubber ware.
I believe the speedometer units are different for the different tyre sizes and was wondering if there is an in situ means of telling which one is fitted to a particular vehicle?
I read a UK post some time back that suggested there were three different speedos which could be identified with a number somewhere on the face. The numbers are supposed to be the number of rotations of the wheel in a given time period. I can't see anything along those lines on my speedometer's face.
Any insights on this are appreciated.

Try this
The Series Speedo and Tyre Sizes
Note that apart from the gearing of the speedo, there are a number of other variables to be considered when getting one:-
Series 1/2/2a has a different fitting for the cable to the Series 3
Speedo may be Imperial or Metric
With or without trip mileage
Six cylinder speedos had a higher maximum speed.
Series 1, 2 and 2a up to 1967 did not have warning lights incorporated as does the later 2a and 3.

John,
Thanks for directing me to that site - it covers the 3 numbers that I was inquiring about in the OP. Although, I must admit to only half getting what they stood for correct.
My quick question goes back to part of the OP which was that I can't actually see one of those numbers on my S3 speedometer face. The other thread has a photo of an older speedometer in which the number is clearly visible above the odometer.
Should the S3 speedometer faces carry one of those numbers?
Cheers,
On a S3 speedo it's usually below, and slightly to the left of the amber light. It's the last number. W.
John (and also B.S.F. Nut),
Hello from Abilene TX -travelling with my son across the high plains towards the Chihuahuan Desert and, as always, thoroughly enjoying US hospitality.
Thanks again for setting me right. There is a tiny number down near the amber light, which in my case is partly obscured by the usual rim of grot that the gauges acquire with time.
When I get home I will clean it up a get out my magnifying glass and take a closer look at that number.
Cheers,
You're looking for either 1408 for 750s or 1536 for 650s on a MPH speedo. I think it's 860 and 880 respectively on KMH speedos.
