Series 3 109 ute build date

Just acquired my 'new' s3 109 ute and trying to figure out the build year. All I have is a chassis number - is there a way to correlate that to year ?

Hi Chazza - it's pre 1989 which according to VICROADS website means it didn't need to have one. It has the chassis number and a small plate from a syd company which put it together (think it was shipped from uk unassembled). Cheers,

You used to be able to get details from The Calvin website but that doesn't seem to be working.

This site gives you some info but there is no way of telling the year from the chassis number between '62 and '79.
Land Rover FAQ - History, Production, Sales - Chassis Numbering

But... hopefully someone will know when suffix A started & stopped which would give you an idea.

    G'day Jonathan,
This is taken from the Federal Govt vehicle-regulation-bulletins available here: http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa...Jan2011_v2.pdf

Quoted below is part of the preamble:
Currently there are two ADR editions in operation:
 the Second Edition covering vehicles manufactured on or after 1 January 1969 to 30 June 1988; and
 the Third Edition covering vehicles manufactured on or after 1 July 1988.

So this means that your car should have a Compliance plate.

The compliance plate - also known as a VIN plate - should be on the front panel, visible when the bonnet is opened next to the bonnet latch. It is a silly place to put it, because if the panel is changed for a pre-'69 one, the identity of the vehicle gets lost! On it is written the; manufacturer's name; month and year of build; chassis no.; a description of the car e.g. 4 cyl petrol utility; and which Australian Design Rules apply to the vehicle.

If you don't have one you will probably have to write to Land Rover with your chassis number and ask them for a certificate of authenticity for licencing,

    Cheers Charlie

Chazza - I had a look at the preamble and the way I read it the vehicle would need to comply with the ADR second edition but that it wouldn't necessarily need to have a compliance plate. Post 1988 the vehicle would have to comply with the 3rd edition and presumably display the VIN per the Cwth legislation brought in ?

I might be misinterpreting it but having the doc is useful - thanks ! Cheers, jonathan

My S3 is a '78 model and it has a compliance plate but it is an interesting point that you raise, because I don't know when they were first glued on to cars.

I would be surprised if they didn't have them once the ADR's were made compulsory for manufacturers,

    Cheers Charlie
