Thread: Ratio change/overdrive

You obviously have a need for the PTO but I recently fitted a Roverdrive/Roamerdrive to my SWB Holden powered series three and I find it fantastic. It's a little bit noisy when I'm off the gas and it does not have a load on it, ie when i back off but before the engine breaking load comes onto it! However this noise is gradually reducing with time as it does more kays and the gears are starting to mate better. I still drive it at the same speed, eighty kmh mostly and up to 95 ish at times. Fuel consumption hasn't changed much, maybe one mile per gallon better, but it makes the landy a lot nicer to drive with reduced engine and tranny noise etc. and hopefully a longer life for all the drive components.

Thanks Mick, I did look at going down that road, but I do want to keep the PTO option available - although I have no definate use for it at the moment, I have a few ideas that I may act on one day, so I thought this may be a better option, however it is not the most straightforward, and I would like to find someone who has done this before, or someone that can recommend a first class machine shop. Although I have ready access to the required machines, my skills with them don't extend to those tolerances, and neither do the owners of them - he looked at the instructions and said 'I could have a go, but mot sure if I could get it that spot on'. I appreciate that he was up front with me rather than stuffing it and saying 'oops' later on.

hi a landrover mate on the island fitted a ashcroft and he is oer the moon with it i will speake tohim and you can have a chat to him we may be start to get them machined if we get enough orders ps ashcroft state only good for 6 ccylinder motors a fantastic conversion jim

I'm going to be doing a transfer case rebuild in the coming months and this had crossed my mind! I'd love to find out how you go with it as well as costs etc.

Thanks Jim - mine is a 6 cylinder, so no dramas there. When you say 'the island', what island are we talking about here? Any more info on the coversion would be great, and if he can do the machine work, can you find out what sort of price he could do it for?

You may beat me to it by the sounds of it. I still have plenty of other things to do on mine before I get to this, but I am planning ahead. I should have the engine/gearbox/TC out over Summer, so I will go from there.

I am still finalising the disk brake conversion I have undertaken. I'll post all the details once I have it complete and engineered, but that could be a couple of months yet. As a teaser, I have an arrangement figured out and mostly built/machined that seems to work well, and my engineer likes the sound of it, but until I finish a few things, and show him the mock up, I'm not going to let the cat out of the bag here - you'll all just have to wait a little longer... The factory rims may even fit, but that isn't confirmed yet as I'm still playing with the rotor/caliper combo.

If you are not interested in a super low first in low range you could just change the diffs to 3.54s (I think - somewhere around there) - that might achieve the gearing you are after.

My Isuzu C240 Series III came with a high speed transfer box.
May have been an Australian version because one of the gears was welded up (centre from one gear, outer from another) picture in post #59 of this thread Isuzu C240 powered Series 3
In post #45 you can see the modification to the transfer box idler shaft position, I think it appears in a few other posts.

4 Wheel Drives in Melbourne list them but I think they are from Ashcroft. In their old catalogue it's $935 but that included the modified case.

The previous owner of mine claimed it was a bit slow pulling away (maybe because it's a small Isuzu NA diesel !) but it had 'long legs'.

Mine isn't on the road and since getting a replacement flywheel made (earlier in the above thread) I've only driven it down our driveway so I can't give any first hand feedback yet.
