    Hand brake series 3

Not sure if its a hand brake issue or not but when i reverse it seems like the
hand brake is on, the car does have some gearbox issues which will soon come to light when its dropped out. Wondering if any one has experienced a similar problem??

Quite possible - dragging handbrake due to foreign material in it (probably oil from a leaking seal), seized actuator, broken spring etc, or simply adjusted up too tight.

Dragging backwards only will be because one of the shoes (the one self actuated backwards) is working better than the other.

Yep, and as John noted, due to an oil leak. Both my series III and my RRC have the same issue. I have pulled the RRC one apart, but yet to refit it. The series is a long term project and currently has no brakes apart from the handbrake, so not really fussed about it stopping quickly while reversing at the moment.

Mine is the same - thought it must have been one of Leylands' options.........

Thank you gentlemen. It's all coming apart very shortly when I pull the box etc out, will check all the things mentioned. Keep telling myself it's just a big mechano set!!!!

To get in before Ron, I think you mean Meccano. The problem with the brake will probably be obvious as soon as you remove the drum, but a further point to note is that the adjuster post is fixed, but the actuator post should be free to move to allow the shoes to centre, but held in place by a spring clip. It must be able to move but stay where it is moved to, if the clip is missing or the whole assembly frozen in place, there will be problems.
