Lionelgee, the electric vacuum pump setup is really simple

if i was running a 2.25na Diesel i would most certainly choose the electric pump over the reservoir and flap system unless i was building for originality but then it would possibly mean spending a lot of time looking for good condition bits or rebuilding/remachining to get the flap to operate correctly and create the required vacuum as i eased off the accelerator pedal

electric vacuum pumps give as good as "instantaneous" vacuum as you're likely to get plus you can have it without the engine running with just the ignition switched on and the pedal pressed

both my "running" 2As have 200tdi's fitted so come with the mechanical pump, my project has the 2.25p but no servo

to be honest an 88" doesn't need a servo with 10" brakes as my bitsa would happily lift the rear axle under heavy braking , a servo is more for your own comfort with 10" brakes

although i have since fitted a dual line pedal box and servo in my bitsa plus 11" (yes eleven inch) SLS (single leading shoe) front brakes, now it'll easily lift the rear axle under heavy braking at speed with minimal effort, the worry now is which way it'll try to rotate with heavy braking

    p.s.
my 109 has no servo at present but it is planned for the future along with disc brakes on the front axle

    p.p.s.
i have personally driven Divies 88" as i welded on new dumb irons for him so i can definitely vouch for the electric vacuum pump working well

I did quite a lot of cleaning and assembling this weekend. I put the glass in the door tops and put the rest of the panels back on. With that the exterior is almost done.

Next job is the dashboard wiring and interior cosmetic repairs. I picked up a good replacement dash a while ago and last week got some defender seats from ebay. I plan to retrim these with black vinyl from Exmoor trim so they don't look too out of place.

    cheers

Long time no update, but lots of little things have been moving along: wiring, new seats, seat belts, dash, painting, cleaning, soundproofing, tyres etc etc - takes a lot of time but doesn't look like much has changed. Hoping to go in for roadworthy by the end of the year or very early next.

    cheers

Are you going to soundproof in the footwells and over the gearbox tunnel?
I'd be interested to find out where you got the closed cell foam and other materials from, and for how much?

Thanks all. I haven't finished the soundproofing but I did install mass loaded vinyl backed with closed cell foam under the transmission tunnel - probably not quite as good but I wanted to keep the bare finish for practicality. The footwell has mass loaded vinyl under the mats and thick brush on body deadener along the front of the footwell. I'll probably add mass loaded vinyl on the inside too. Next soundproofing step is vinyl covered open cell foam on the roof to stop the sound reverberating around the cabin.

I bought the mass loaded vinyl from a place in Footscray. I think they recently changed their name but this is the place:
Mass Loaded Vinyl - Higgins Insulation
Price was quite reasonable as I bought offcuts.

The foam backed vinyl is from megasorber but they no longer stock the line and I bought the last of their cream vinyl. They do stock a lot of mass loaded vinyl products though.

The mats are just generic Britpart ones that I got from the UK - they are not expensive and can be ordered from the usual suspects (LRseries, paddocks etc) but the postage is the killer so probably not worth ordering unless you're getting a lot of other stuff at the same time. I'm not sure if they're available locally though.

    cheers

    Vacuum

    Hello Phin,

You know how I contacted you regarding different vacuum alternatives for the brake booster? Well on my way to my new job I stopped off in Tamworth and stripped down the Series 3 LWB that I had sitting there. It had a 3.6 litre Isuzu diesel engine fitted to it that had deeply scoured piston sleeves. I bought the vehicle sight unseen off eBay, back when I was very, very new to Land Rovers - nay rather gullible. I realised not long ago the best option was to strip the vehicle of its best parts on site and sell the rest. Instead of going through all the cost and trouble of bringing the whole vehicle back to Bundaberg.

Anyway ... during my last visit I lifted the bonnet .... lo and behold what do I see but a complete vacuum system hooked up to the booster via a genuine Hitachi alternator with a vacuum pump .

It turns out it was a good thing I was unemployed earlier this year and could not at the time afford to get the Peugeot/Rover vacuum pump from the UK. Sometimes one can be out in front and not even know it!

It is good to see your project is coming together Phin

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Hi Lionel, sounds like a good solution. How are you going to plumb in the oil line for the alternator? That was what always made the alternator route tricky for me (that and not having one!)

    cheers
