Work continues, but not much to show for it as I'm mostly fixing the wiring. I'm also adding more soundproofing inside the cabin. For the hardtop sides I'm mostly trying to cut down drumming and reflected noise in the cabin, so no mass loaded vinyl. Instead I'm sticking bits of bituminous roof flashing to the sides, followed by open cell foam glued to a masonite backing held on by velcro. I've just started but hope to do all of the sides.

Not sure what to do about the roof lining as the roof leaks around the gutters and I'm reluctant to glue open cell foam anywhere where there's water. I'm still looking out for a defender head liner to modify if anyone in Victoria has one.

I also fitted a radio. This is a 1970s Japanese Pianola radio that I had in my collection taken from wrecks, along with a case from a Renault 16. I chose this one as it has a 6 pin din tape input. I bought a 6 pin din to 3.5mm adapter on ebay and now I can play music off my phone. I haven't connected an aerial yet, not sure if I will get around to it. It works really well... until you start the engine.

A few other sundry items, such as repainted steering wheel and cleaned up badges. The Wegenwacht badge is Dutch roadside assistance. This Land Rover was bought by a Dutch couple to travel around Europe so I thought I'd transfer it to the late IIA grille.

    cheers

    Hello Phin,

Hmmm where to feed the oil line from?

When I get back home and I can put my hands to a Land Rover again I will have a look to see where I had once thought the oil lines could go.

From memory I was going to check to see if the points on the 2.6 litre petrol engine where the Army made the lines to supply the Fitted For Radio oil cooler element are also have something similar available on the 2.25 litre diesels? If such is the case then I thought of putting a tee off a similar point on the feed and return lines + an oil cooler.

I am working interstate and have not so much as picked up a spanner or touched a Series III Land Rover for months now. I am having withdrawal symptoms.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

    Hello Phin,

How are things going with the Dutch Camper? Have you done any more work on it? How has the vehicle performed since 2014 and what adventures have you been on?

The clutch died on Baldrick and when I was just running the engine regularly once a week as maintenance something untoward happened to the motor. While it was ticking over one day a strange noise came out of the engine and then it stopped working amongst a bigger cloud of smoke than normal. It was already very smoky when I bought it. Prior to this happening I had a mobile mechanic come to do a compression test. However, the bloke did not have an adaptor small enough to fit the 2.25 diesel.

I then bought another vehicle and Baldrick's position in the list of priorities slipped. So too did Baldrick's status - he was moved from the house yard to the long paddock. Baldrick is now in the space set aside for spares vehicles or long term projects.

In the interim I picked up another 2.5 litre diesel engine that has an unknown quality. It is waiting in the shed for me to find time to work on it. It will at least need a new gasket set put through it and everything checked over. There are now two other Land Rovers in the list before Baldrick though.

I do have the alternator with a vacuum pump that was off a 4bb1 four cylinder Isuzu diesel. I also have the brake booster and brake pressure regulating valve and now my own brake line making tools. Once I get the engine sorted out and a new clutch and I know everything is ticking over happily, I will tackle the brakes. They had already been upgraded to the six cylinder sized wheel brake cylinders by a former owner. It just needs conversion from a single circuit system to a dual - pipe wise. However, Rebus the 202 Holden powered 109 and Batty the ex-army fitted for radio have first and second place before Baldrick. Time will tell....

Postscript ... I have to alter what I wrote last night. In your last post back in November 2015 - gee two year ago now you asked how I was going to tap the oil line in for the vacuum pump. Remembering your thread today has awoken some memory cells. I had intended to use Baldrick my Series III vehicle as my main towing vehicle. To assist in this while I was tapping in for the vacuum pump by fitting a universal oil cooler adaptor 10 an sandwich http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UNIVERSAL...IAAOSwQYZWy77q. Then a couple of tees on the inlet and outlet lines to run the vacuum and incorporate a Serck oil cooler 25 Row 115mm Wide Core 8AN Fittings PNARO1663 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Serck-Oil...IAAOxykUZTets7

The added benefit of this system is that it allowed a spin on oil filter

    Kind Regards
    Lionel
