check the gearbox number would be the best way
I've been looking at various conversion kits for my S3, I'm not interested in v8's my Disco has a v8.
Ideally I'd rather go diesel, mainly due to engine life compared to petrol and the fact that the places I want it to take me you just can't get petrol.
The question is how do I tell which gearbox I have? I've checked the workshop manual but it doesn't say which gearbox to which model S3.

Thanks Smurf, trying not to sound completely un-hinged here but I'm not at home to check. Is there a chart to cross refference anywhere?
I do not knwo much about the s3 gearbox, I know there is different suffix's is that what you are trying to find out?
I've been reading about avaiable conversion kits, high ratios and 5 speed box's but normally they only refer to the G/box model ie: LT77, r380 (?) etc.
I dont have the manuals on me at the moment but if you want I can send you the gearbox manuals off a few different land rovers that might help you.

Thanks again for the offer Smurf, I just found the sticky in the main Series forum about the differences in series G/box's.
It's a 73' 109" ute
At the moment its a bit of a mut with rough FJ 40 axles and a dellow ford 6 cyl conversion.
Does the Dellow kit use an adaptor plate or replacement bellhousing? I only ask as many of their car kits replace the bell and if so you'd be better off going back to std LR bell so it's a known pattern then adapting.
Wasn't the S3 a LT76, RRC 4sp LT77, RRC early 5sp LT85 then R380?
I think wrong on all counts..., sorry.
The LT77 was the RRC (and UK 4 cyl 90/110/130) 5-speed. 77 mm between shaft centres.
The LT77S was the (slightly) Strengthened version fitted to Discos and 200tdi defenders.
The LT85 was developed by/for santana, and used in V8 110 and 130 landies. LR lost the rights to use it when they split ties with Santana (hence the LT77S development). 85 mm between shaft centres.
The R380 replaced the LT77S - still 77 mm between centres, but a lot of improvements (early ones were still ****e though).
The LT95 4-speed is/was the strongest LR box - used on RRC and 110/130 V8s, prior to the introduction of the LT85. 95 mm between shaft centres.
The box fitted to the series I/II/III is just called the series box. Don't know the shaft centre measurement, but probably around 77 mm. However it was designed for rover cars long before Leyland Transmissions existed, so not called an LT.
This is all a bit academic, as the vehicle in question could have been fitted with almost any box when the conversion was done (or since). It originally would have a suffix A/B series 3 box - the weakest of the SIII boxes.
