    Spot the Difference

These are my two front wheels. What's the differences between the two, can anyone tell me. I only just noticed the other day the thicker bit of steel around the wheels studs.

without the rib is a series rim

with the rib is a late series rim or a defender rim. Its the same styling as the military rim as well.

The rib adds some meat to the stud holes and helps prevent them from cracking out and elongating.

Thanks Dave and Dennis, how likely is it that the wheels have different offsets. The wheel with the rib looks like it sticks out a little more.

    Rib = Military

    Hello All,

Just goes to show how easily I am distracted. I was about to start work for the day. I took a walk and looked at my two military Series 3 Land Rovers and despite the rims being the right green only one of 8 rims had the rib.

So was the military rib a constant thing fitted to all vehicles in service?

Or was there a mixture of civilian without the rib and military with rib when it came to Series 3 Land Rovers late 1970s to 1980?

Maybe over time the military rib rims have just been replaced by civilian ones and the previous owners painted them green to match the other rims.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Well I don't know if there was a ? Specific rim for Series military vehicles other than they used 272309's ( which is the rim as fitted to 109 vehicles) to all vehicles & trailers up to the introduction of the Series 3.
The Series 3 rim has the raised center between the PCD for the hub, the 110's use another wheel which is designated as FV2000727, as far as the off set, well somewhere within this site there is a chart which will explain it all, cheers Dennis

    Rims with raised centre:
AYG 8038 5 1/2" same as 272309 slightly different off set.
    AYG 8108 6"
These are the nuts to use with series hubs with 9/16 BSF studs, depending on the length of the studs and the kind of rim. .W.

Initially the s2 and 2a would have been ribless. S3 would have the ribs. Quite possible to be mixed and matched I suppose. As Dinty said, as long as they were 109 rims, you were good to go.
