Jock still is running rougher than a dog. I've replaced most, if not all of the electrical side of things. i've tuned the Stromberg Bendix carb ( I found a technical drawing and tuning guide), it seems to be smooth at tick over now. On acceleration though it starts to sound like a WRX. i have noticed that the spindle in my distributor has a lot of movement and was wondering about scattered ignition. When I pull the individual plug leads off one at a time at tickover, the engine obviously drops a cyl, so it is firing on all four.
How much movement should a spindle have? I think my 1973 SIII has had the original 25D Lucas dizzie replaced with a later 45D, but I can't find a list of the part numbers on line to confirm it to myself.
I've managed to answer my own question thanks to a local "old school" parts shop. It's a 25D, he supplied me points, condenser and rotor arm. I fitted those, set the gap, advanced the ignition a bit, and Jock is running like a dream.
Over the weekend I treated him to an oil change + a new filter; topped up the diffs, the gear box and the Fairey o/D and he's running brilliantly.
Next job is to adjust the tappets.....then replace the coolant system hoses and flush the rad.
