    Series Three, SWB, restoration project.

Hi all, my best mate has finally succumbed and bought a Land Rover. It is a Series Three from 1975 with a deluxe bonnet and a rear door. It also has headlining over the front section. It has a perplexing rattle in the engine which comes and goes but there is no smoke from the exhaust. He has taken off the tow bar to reveal significant corrosion in the crossmember but there is little corrosion evident elsewhere except in the door tops. Altogether a neat vehicle and well within his abilities to fix as he is a mechanical engineer by training and enjoys working on cars. The Land Rover is unknown territory for him, but he learns fast. I am working on him to join the Forum, so we will see how it goes. Any suggestions re the engine rattle and ideas on how best to address the rear crossmember rust will be welcome. Cheers, 130man.

sounds like a cool project, sorry i can't help on the engine bit... not my strong point

As for the rust, that depends on how bad it is, if it's really bad, you could chop it and replace, if not too bad then just clean it up and repaint! Photos would be great, someone on here would have 'been there done that'

HI Justin and Debruiser, thanks for the replies. I will pass on the link. The rust puts the rear cross member beyond repair , in my opinion, so a new one is probably the best option. I will see if he can get photos. I am not aware that he has a camera, but probably has one in his phone or his wife might have one. Cheers, 130man.
