fuel tank - repair or buy new?

    Hi all

I started servicing the engine today (holden 186) and noticed that the inline fuel filter was chocked with a muddy looking substance. I pulled the sender out of the tank and there is a number of things in the tank ranging from mud/sludge and some rust flakes.

Has anyone bought a new tank? Is there anywhere local? I see that Craddocks have them for about 50 pounds, but I am sure the freight will be huge!

    Thanks

If it's not leaking, have it cleaned out first.

Or remove the tank, toss in some coarse gravel & give it a good shake. This will loosen off any rust flakes & you'll be good for another 30 years.

There are also tank liner kits available but I haven't had success with those.

I bought a new 16 gallon one from Four Wheel Drives (03) 98900509 for a bit under $500. Quality reasonably good, the drain plug is on the back instead of in the middle of the bottom plate and it was made of reasonably thick steel plate. Took them a week to get it to me (they had to make it first).
Mine had rusted at the bottom edge and was weeping through when I replaced it.

FWD here in Brisbane. 16 Gallon tank for less than $400. If you are in one of the clubs that they give discounts to of course .

    Thanks Tim

Rang FWD - $330 for new tank and $85 for sender and free delivery! - couldn't be any happier then that.
