    Common Meccano Pieces?

    Hi all,

    I am relatively new to the Series section (see "Got Budder" thread In Series with Holden engines section) but also own an '85 County V8 that this thread will apply to and perhaps to some degree even my old '95 P38 Rangie.

    I am interested to know if in the broad experience and huge time a lot of members have spent on resto's and maintenance if there are a few high use items/parts that I should look to keep on hand in my shed?

    For example, most panels, and tin in the interior are held together by a few common size nuts and bolts. Ebay UK has a huge number of listings for stainless nut&bolt kits to use in full upgrades when rot takes over. Can someone share the most common sizes and whether stainless is best?

    Chassis, dive train and such have eons old shared design elements across series and defender trucks.... Is there anything to be gained by buying some parts in box quantities instead if only's?

    I am repairing and refitting some tins and seats, etc to Budder and The Count over the coming months so figure I may as well be refreshing rusty fixings and buying in bulk where I can.

    Any comments/feedback appreciated.

    Probably the most common sizes for body bolts in the Series are quarter inch UNF bolts and nuts either one inch or 1.25". In addition they need to have flat washers (1" OD) and spring washers. As to material - if you have twisted off the old rusty ones, stainless can look attractive. However, this material is higher in the electrochemical series than the aluminium bodywork, so it corrodes instead of the bolts - and is harder to replace.

    The original bolts were sherardised, which is hard to find these days. If you can find them, galvanised is even better, and may be easier to find. Avoid electroplated fasteners, they are little better than black steel. In all cases assemble with the threads protected by antiseize. Have a talk to a specialist faster shop.

    If you are not doing a meticulous restoration, 6x25 and 6x30mm will do.

    The other thing worth carrying is the screws and speednuts used for the floor panels. These are obtainable from most non-dealer Landrover specialists.
