    Question Lifting Budder.

Budder is our 88" red 202 equipped series three being set up for the annual summer beach holidays. Parabolics for a cheap, low use, beach truck are just financially out of the question.

    1. Is there anything wrong with spring over (rolled and re-aligned) std diff's for mostly quiet recreational beach work?

Even though I was very, very, young I recall this being 'the done thing' for a lot of 4wd's back in the leaf spring days.

    2. Any reason(s) it wouldn't be possible or safe on a series 3 shorty?

    3. Beyond extended shocks, what else would be required?

    1. Spring over in a Series Landrover implies a lift of the order of six inches. Apart from the difficulty in getting engineering approval, there are serious mechanical problems to overcome.

    2. Even more modest lifts on 88" Series Landrovers cause difficulties with the angles on the prop shaft U-joints, especially the rear one. The resulting angle on the drag link from the relay will cause bump steering, although this can be reduced by redesigning the steering linkage, which could be quite costly.

    3. Engineering approval, new prop shafts with wide angle U-joints, steering modifications, extended brake hoses, modifications to clutch housing crossmember to clear prop shaft.

It is probably possible to do this, although easier with a lwb Series, but although some have actually done this none seem to have been really successful. A search on this forum will find some earlier discussion.

Of course, the final question is "why do you want to do this anyway?". Modest lifts using extended spring hangers and military shackles are a lot easier, and it is only extreme offroading that requires a lift of any kind on an 88" anyway.

Big knobly tyres. That should be good enough for the beach run and P38 recovery.

It's just the age old five P's. Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance.

"Budder's" new role in life will include tackling reasonably long, loose, sand dune/hill climbs that have nearly caught me out a few times in the Mrs late-ish model 105 series Cruiser (with 2" lift and quite wide 33's). Go ahead and give me the old 'Toyota's are Crap' lines on that bit, but honestly at the moment, he just looks incredibly low to the ground. I am simply trying to determine if there are any easy, low cost fixes/cheats to change that.

FWIW, we now have some sunraysia style wheels (think they might be Kings) ready to throw on bigger rubber (like Mickey_Marsh says). Based on Parabolics being too expensive, the Military and Spring Over options being too technical (and too expensive!) we will probably just be flogging the tyres from "The Count" and leaving it at that. These are oldish Dunlop Adventurer 7.50R16LT's which should help out a fair bit anyway.

What money I do have left for "Budder" beach life prep. needs to be directed at brakes (leaky cylinders), fluid changes (all around), engine service (as per other thread) and perhaps a reco clutch (bugger!) yet... Hopefully, the clutch is just sticking from sitting for a good part of the last decade. It has minimal travel and what it does have is virtually on the floor... Fingers crossed it free's up with a bit of use after the other stuff is done!

    Thanks again for the guidance.

Even though he is a stout, charming little fella... I don't think " Budder" would get too far recovering your P38. Might get it out of a dry, shallow, hole. But the 202 probably hasn't got the gonad's for much more than that.

Besides Mick. Your P38 will end up being just like mine. Always well maintained, always reliable and always get's you home under its own steam!

You did buy that low km's one you were looking at didn't you?

    No.

Didn't buy the Merc I'm looking at either.

But, now you've reminded me, I must get out and have a look at them.

Bah... It will sit out front all wrapped in cotton wool like the 101's.

Buy that P38 and do some proper, enjoyable and comfortable Rangie driving.
    Hoo-Roo,

    Dave.
