^^^ cheers mate, i sent you an email
I am doing a 200tdi conversion - but the Alpine got in the way - apparently the 300tdi is not a big deal to fit either.
If you would like a copy of an article I have written on how I did the conversion, send me an email charlie_myres@yahoo.com.au
Mine has the standard S3 box for now, with overdrive, which is another way to keep the revs down. I plan to fit a New Process gearbox one day,
Cheers Charlie

200tdi is the best way, engine mounts and bell housing is the same as what you have so no need to change the gearbox. If they can handle to 200tdi is another question.
But you need a Defender 200 TDI or will have to do a bit of changing to a to fit a Disco 200tdi into a defender or series.
Main reason is a 200tdi from a disco is low and wide and a Defender 200tdi is high and thin.
300tdi in defenders and disco's are the same so don't have the same problem as with 200tdi . Although need new engine mounts and bell housing diferant.

i cant get a defender one because they are hard to find, but ill look out for one anyway, if i get an auto disco then ill just be carefull with the original gearbox until i find a manual, manuals seem to be pretty hard to find
Yeah know the feeling
I have a 200tdi Disco Manuel which is my toy.
Took me a while to find a Manuel diesel Disco.
Personally I prefer Manuel's.

almost killed the 186 today, had about 900 kg of car parts in the tray followed by a trailer going up the gillies range heading to the tablelands, almost cooked it, and its got a knock when working hard now
these motors are not made for towing lol but they are strong, i need that 200tdi
200 or 300 tdi as mentioned, but you may as well swap in the R380 (or LT77S from 200tdi) and LT230 while you are there. You will need a short (defender) bellhousing for the R380, which ashcrofts can supply.
The isuzu 4JB1T (2.8 TD) from a rodeo/jackaroo is also worth considering.
